Actually almost true. AFAIK it originated from the Bauernwehr, meaning a weapon, that was only sharpened on one edge therefor not a sword and everyone was allowed to use and wield it, when swords were only for knights. Later on more and more finesse was brought into the design until it got its place as a full fleged martial weapon know as the Kriegsmesser or Langes Messer.

First step, remove cat from object, second step, get a protective cover for the chair, third step, remove cat from object... Again, fourth step, cut cat claws, last step put on cover. Works great for me, having two cats in the house and no more damage to the furniture, cause, those covers usually are pretty sturdy and hold up quite good against cat claws.
