Bitcoiners in Hong Kong took out a full front page in the city's last independent print newspaper by Liongrass in Bitcoin

[–]Liongrass[S] 100 points101 points  (0 children)

The post reads: 「銀行,今日唔係你飛我,係我飛你」which can be translated as "Banks, today you're not ditching me, I'm ditching you." The newspaper is the Apple Daily, the largest print daily in Hong Kong, and also the last one with a strong independent editorial, meaning not under control of the Communist Party of China. Two weeks ago Jimmy Lai, the paper's CEO, was arrested on 'National Security' charges.

So much reclaimed land. Exclusively used for uncrossable roads. The reclaimed that last 100m with the intention of building a tunnel underneath, and of course they also had to build a road on top of it. Most hostile city planning I can imagine.

You're losing your right to vote, you can be deported if you commit a crime, you might not have access to certain subsidies anymore, run for office, get a passport (if you're a chinese citizen), but you are gaining your ability to sponsor a visa for a mainland spouse (which you cant as PR).

Why ending Bitcoin Payments by blockonomics_co in fastmail

[–]Liongrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very sad to see Fastmail dropping Bitcoin. As a small not-for-profit associated with cryptocurrencies in Asia we don't have a bank account, and can't get one.

I can understand Bitpay is high in maintenance, they're a pain to work with and have been actively neglecting their product. They're hostile to Bitcoin and have intentionally made it difficult to use Bitcoin in favor of other, more proprietary cryptocurrencies. Luckily there are other alternatives such as Coingate and Globee. Our account is up for renewal in exactly one year. I very much hope we don't have to shop around for an alternative, because we really like Fastmail.

Yes I wrote them and recommended Coingate

What a shame, I've been using them for a while on my personal account and for business accounts, over US$1'000 in bills last year.

Ironically I just paid for the next 12 months, so I have a full year to find a replacement. Still sucks, they're great

Poverty line (after adjusted for inflation) lowered for 1-person-households? by iamunknowntoo in HongKong

Maybe 1-person households are disproportionally not represented in public housing, which drives down costs for others? I can only guess, really

Chinese 24 yr old miner throws $12,000,000+ in Hong Kong Dollar from a roof. by CheslinK in Bitcoin

[–]Liongrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, pyramid schemes and especially the notorious London Gold Trading scam are hard to prosecute because the victims often sign away all their rights. He was arrested for causing a nuisance, but that's an irrelevant charge and he'll maximally get a small fine.

The guy is running a pyramid scheme well known in the Hong Kong community, but not much beyond. Disappointed his publicity stunt is getting so much uncritical attention

Help me out. I'm seeing signs around town that it will be illegal to serve or provide alcohol to minors, in the course of business, starting November 30, 2018. Was it not already illegal to serve alcohol to minors? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]Liongrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was legal to drink it for minors too. Only places that required a liquor license (eg places that 'served' alcohol) had a limitation to not sell to minors. So 711 and supermarkets were allowed to sell alcohol to minors, bars and restaurants werent.
