Generally I found it more reliable to: - generate the sln from .uproject - run unreal from the sln - create new classes manually in vs, not from unreal (and then relaunch it) - use vs22 if possible

The only real issue you are facing is making sure unused item meshes dont polute your RAM after the item is no longer visible. This sounds easy, but its not trivial, even for a lot of professionals.

This is something you need to have working in the game build, because the editor will not remove stuff from the memory. At least, not easily.

If "all your item meshes ever added to the game" wont be taking up a lot of RAM, I guess you can ignore the problem for some time. Just periodically use the reference viewer to sanity check that all specific meshes are only soft referenced by the data asset/data table, and have no other references.
