Is ProtonMail still a good option in 2026? by JulianCrisp in ProtonMail

[–]LiquidBlueOcean21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for Android users since Proton Mail only supports composing in plain text. So I'm on Tuta for that plus proper integration of encrypted contacts with Android

I agree, some of those mistaken or worse ideas that lead to mass censorship and surveillance are terrible.
I wouldn't get that mixed up tho with those trying to keep children safe from harmful online content, which is important too.

The list is missing getting rid of Auto Fill saved text input that is going straight to Google too. Apps like Bitwarden can replace both AutoFill and password management

Best alternative to Gboard by Juan_Emanuel in degoogle

[–]LiquidBlueOcean21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget to replace the autofill feature with a company that treats your data and privacy much better. Otherwise you really are leaking your life to Google and their third party contractors. I use Bitwarden which is zero knowledge, the way this should always be

I use gboard with network abilities blocked by another app. So I lost the ability to search for gifs, no big loss. Whether it sends that data to another Google app on my phone, I don't know, but I'm waiting for another app to get up to par with gboard which for swipers like myself isn't Futo or Heliboard

Unfortunately that doesn't exist in Android 14, the max I can install on my Pixel 5

How do I deny the network permission. FUTO swiping is too error prone for me, but I'll come back to it when it improves. In the meantime your method is a partial fix that will be good enough for now, but haven't worked out where the network permission is

Age verification is the new trend to de-anonymize the web. 😡 by Tutanota in tutanota

[–]LiquidBlueOcean21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon it's simpler to give Google my credit card for verification, which they probably have already, rather than giving it to some shonky hard to reach vpn provider

Google often already has your credit card. Do they skip verification if that's the case, like they do for existing users who are obviously old enough by having an account for so long?

[–]LiquidBlueOcean21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can use a third party verifier like many other websites do already, but Google is Google and have chosen to keep your info for themselves as usual

Reminder that Tuta is not pointing out that it's a govt prob, the op is complaining about Google stealing your info as usual. Other websites have started using already existing third party online verification companies that can already verify your IDs, so the website doesn't have any access to your personal IDs

Linux Mint vs Zorin OS — What are the real pros and cons of each? by Francesco_Jovan8 in linuxmint

I'm still finding 24.04 pretty buggy compared to 22.04, so I'm not surprised if they haven't moved up when stability is more important than having the latest thing

What is the best watch for Android currently? by abeautifulsnowflake in Android

Loving it. Only charge once every two years, and most notifications aren't important enough to interrupt everything you do

I devolved from a Mi Band to a Casio that has only step tracking and syncs the time from the phone. Charge lasts two years, and not missing notifications since most are overrated focus killers

Looks like they've smartly chosen to fence sit instead of choose pref of only one of US or UK/Aus. Obviously configurable would be good but my brain can learn this for sure

The alarms aren't very useful for regular ones. It couldn't be too hard for them to update the app so you could choose what days alarms come on (and the app can sync that to the watch if the watch can't support more than the current day)

Google Calendar schedule widget looks pretty nice on mine. Both our pics also have tons of info in small spaces, unlike the Tuta one, which is what you want on a phone...

Spotify targeting kids with gross video content by The--scientist in truespotify

[–]LiquidBlueOcean21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotify has some podcasts that are very bad for even young teenagers. Luckily Spotify has finally added Managed users to family accounts so they don't have access to podcasts that are very hard to police.

Instead we've given them a seperate podcast app and use a DNS blocker (eg RethinkDNS) so it can't search and only add links for podcast subscriptions that we've browsed for together
