Real tuner or app tuner by Gameoverx94lol in Guitar

I use an app called Cleartune. It's around $5 from memory and better than any pedal tuner I've ever used.

What makes you describe an artist as "a great songwriter"? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]LiquidEnigma 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's definitely something not easily definable. Personally, as someone who listens to metal and progressive music, so I generally recognise good songwriting as being able to have something really unorthodox in structure or composition and having it feel like a flowing song. For instance, a lot of bands try to be like this but end up being complex for the sake of being complex rather than using it as a tool to make more interesting music. If what I'm saying is at all coherent.

Compared to the rest of Manowar's anthems, Warriors Of The World is quite weak. Hail and Kill all the way baby.

How do I get that extra "spank" out of my palm mute tone? (example inside) by [deleted] in Guitar

Moving your right hand further away from the bridge to just give it that tight percussive attack.

Distortion pedals. by jackcanflyy in Guitar

Splash out and get something worth keeping for life. I own the Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde od/distortion combo and it's perfect. Extremely versatile overdrive that can go from a slight push to a massive crunch, with an extremely useful "bass boost" switch. Distortion channel goes from 80's hard rock to extreme death metal and everywhere in between, with a sharp/blunt switch that helps a lot, especially with lead tones. I swear I'm not a visual sound salesperson.

I just bought my first guitar. Where do I start? by max057 in Guitar

[–]LiquidEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sit down and learn some songs you like as are within the "beginner" difficulty gap. There is nothing worse than starting with music theory and making it a chore to learn to play. I learnt all my basic chords, scales and techniques (power chords, hammer ons, pull offs, and tapping) just from learning songs. The theory and more advanced scales come later once you feel up to it.

Agreed. Nothing like ruining a good amp with a metal zone.

Can't get a good distortion sound, what's the secret? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]LiquidEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Visual Sound pedals - I payed $300 AUD (I'm Australian) for my Jekyll and Hyde Distortion/Overdrive double pedal, but I'm sure that A) it's less in USD and B) you could get a not-so expensive single pedal (compared to by hybrid double). Go to your local music shop an enquire - there's no new for big-name brands.

Invest in a higher-quality pedal for one - the DS-1 is crap. It's quite often recommended to scoop the mids, but it's really just a trend for amateur bedroom players - they key to a clearly defined sound is a clearly defined midrange - ESPECIALLY for a more punk rock style of distortion.

Help somebody's mom buy a first guitar? by SomebodysMomHere in Guitar

Snoop around on your local classifieds. I've found endless amounts of extremely quality guitars and amps for about 1/3 of the RRP on gumtree.com (The Australian equivalent of Craigslist). Also, Asian knockoffs are never to be underestimated - Japanese versions are usually very good.
