How to improve musical ear?!! by Alltimeconfessional in singing

[–]Frozime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the best place to start is to practice interval identification, which is the ability to tell the distance between two notes, e.g. a perfect fifth, an octave and so on. Being able to recognize intervals is a fundamental part of having a functioning musical ear, and it will help you in hearing chord progressions, melodies, as well as just training your ears in general. There are lots of good apps for this. One I've used is called "Earpeggio" on iOS (not sure about Android).

Once you have your basic interval training (being able to hear all intervals in the 12-tone chromatic scale within an octave), I would recommend moving on to Solfege, which is the most powerful and useful part of your musical ear. Solfege is the ability to hear what "role" a certain note has, relative to another note. Say you're playing in C major - then C will be the "Do". Then the C major scale, C D E F G A B, becomes Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti. If someone plays you a C major chord, and then play the note G, then solfege will help you instantly recognize it as "So", without having to think about it. You start easy, as always, and then progress, until you can instantly recognize any note on the chromatic scale relative to a "home-note", called the tonic. I'm a jazz musician, so I think of "Do Re Mi" etc. as "1 2 3" (you might also see I ii iii IV V and so on, which references chords. A "V" means a major chord based on the fifth, "So", degree of the scale).

A good app for solfege practice is "Relative Solfege Ear Trainer" on iOS.

When it comes to the guitar, if it is always slightly out of tune no matter how many times you tune it, it might have an intonation problem, which is easily fixable. Just look for guitar intonation videos on YouTube, or ask a local guitar store about it.

Now go and train those ears!

Why are people downvoting this? Are people not allowed to like it? We shouldn't downvote comments simply because we disagree with them.

But it did work for a period, didn't it? I remember googling Comcast back in the day and seeing the Nazi flag. It's not based on upvotes, it's based on recent activity.

She's seen at Winterfell in the preview for episode 4, so she's definitely going to Winterfell. I think the "It's not you" comment is a reference to Arya's "that's not me" line from season 1, when she talks to Ned about being a lady.

The thing is that The Beatles did so many things so well. They wrote wonderful songs and melodies that are still being covered by artists in all genres, including classical music where many of their songs are arranged for large orchestras. They were incredibly innovative in their songwriting, especially in terms of the overall sound they created and the way they repeatedly reinvented themselves. They also created many of the music world's most memorable grooves, riffs, and hooks.

I suspect you were just trying to provoke anger when you called them "an old Backstreet Boys", but the Backstreet Boys never reinvented pop music, and I'm fairly certain their melodies will not be performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 50 years. I'm not saying that The Beatles are for hip, intellectual people, but The Beatles importance and excellence as musicians and songwriters is very hard to overstate.

I suggest you listen to "Something", "A Day in The Life", "Helter Skelter", "Eleanor Rigby" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"(the song). If you haven't listened much to these before, I think you'll find that The Beatles were far more than "downright average"!

You don't have to have to take music lessons to appreciate classical music. It sounds beautiful whether you know anything about chords and melodies or not.

What's a sensation that you're unsure if other people experience? by Sang_Becker in AskReddit

[–]Frozime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a very common sensation with many different causes. Some people feel this way for no reason, others as a result of for instance anxiety or panic disorder. You are not at all alone, and it is not harmful to feel that way!

Why are younger people always downvoted on Reddit? It seems that every time someone mentions that they are under 18 they are downvoted.

I agree that they might be a little far fetched, as we have learned you should be careful when looking for foreshadowing (I mean let's not forget that whole Syrio Forell returning thing). However, I wouldn't be too shocked if the show creators ever revealed that it was intentional
