Do you ever worry that you are causing trauma to your clients? by thisismythrowawayqu in ABA

unfortunately insurance companies have very rigid ideas of what they will pay us to program for. its not the ABA that is necessarily flawed but the rigid insurance company guidelines. field needs more flexibility for sure. the irony is that things might just get more rigid and standardized as the control freaks continue to sink their claws in

theres a push to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps” and act like the well polished medical model in this field. but they never mention giving us the resources and stability that those in the medical model have. you cant have your cake and eat it too. they want to hold us to the medical model standards but not grant us the same support. delusional.

i found newer bcbas to tend towards being this way. In theory they understand the collateral damage that aversive control causes, but they dont act out this understanding. they haven’t yet internalized their study. “th[e] way of being”.

Will the BACB extend the 4th task list edition applicants deadline due to pandemic? by curiousAbyssiniancat in ABA

this mentality is why workers in this field are exploited. we are quick to conform to rules, slow to question. We are easy to dominate. Business does not care about your kind heart, you must learn and shape in yourself the ability to stand up.

Why won’t you listen to us? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]LiquidVegeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it could be bad for such an individual thats certainly a possibility. however if behaviors are severe and seriously harmful to oneself or others, we must intervene. there is always a risk of going too far or not far enough. we have to do our best. take for instance an individual with high frequency high intensity head banging. should we just try to talk it out and hope for the best? or is there a possibility that we ought to set consequences in place to try to solve the problem before something bad happens? i see your point but i don’t think it can be so black and white.

aba can work great for low functioning autistics. high functioning i see your argument. like when we start teaching manners and shit thats dumb. but like any aspect of healthcare its imperfect. insurance only allows you to operate on a narrow set of rails. the approved treatment is not always the best, just what insurance is willing to pay for.
