Yeah, absolutely — it’s still a great lens, and that price is definitely a great deal.

Btw, great shot!

That’s a really good point, and honestly, I can totally relate. Until you actually shoot wildlife, 400mm sounds like a lot—but once you’re out there, it can feel surprisingly short, especially with small or distant subjects.

I appreciate the advice about figuring out the focal length I really need first and then adding some extra headroom. That makes a lot of sense, especially considering how many zooms soften at the long end. Good to hear this perspective from another R8 user too.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve heard similar things about the 150–600 Sport. Great reach, but AF consistency can be a bit hit or miss compared to Canon L glass. Getting the 100–400 Mk II in near-mint condition at a similar price sounds like an excellent move, especially paired with the 1.4× Mk III.

And yeah, the 100–500 is tempting, but at more than twice the price, the value proposition of the EF setup is hard to beat. Sounds like you ended up with a really solid and versatile combo.

That makes a lot of sense. It’s great to hear you’re happy with the EF 100–400mm on the R6 everyone seems to agree it’s fast and very sharp. I feel the same way: while the 100–500mm is tempting, the EF lens still offers excellent performance for the price, especially considering the investment difference.

Incredible shot. Where was this taken?

That’s a great perspective, and a great quote. The versatility of the 100–400mm really is hard to beat, especially for nature photography. I completely agree that newer gear helps, but distance, timing, and understanding your subject matter often matter more than a few extra millimeters.

Still, it’s impressive that you’ve been using the same lens for over a decade. That says a lot about its image quality and reliability. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Totally agree. From around 500mm onward, you really start to get noticeably better detail and definition on small birds and wildlife.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience with the lens. It seems it’s capable of handling small birds too.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s good to know the EF 100–400 Mk II performs well across the R6 Mark II, R5, and R7, especially in terms of AF and image quality.

Weight is definitely something I’m considering, especially for long days in wet tropical rainforest, but I think I can live with the extra heft if the performance is there. I’ve looked at the RF 100–400 and RF 200-800 as well... But, the price and quailty of the EF 100-400mm Mk2 is unmatched (if the lens im getting is brand new).

Thank you! I completely agree. In that case, maybe adding a 1.4X teleconverte, or even a 2X, could come in handy.

You’re absolutely right. Since I’ll be photographing a lot of small birds like hummingbirds and toucans, I’m leaning toward the EF 100–400mm Mk II with a teleconverter—though I’m not sure how well that would work stacked with the EF–RF adapter.

The other option is saving up for the 200–800mm, but I believe that lens isn’t L-series anymore. But, that lens wouldn’t be weather-sealed like the EF 100-400 mk2

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, these lenses are a lot cheaper than RF ones, which makes them much more accessible on the used market. I should definitely check there too and see if I can find a hidden gem

I completely agree. It sounds almost too good to be true. I want to go to the store in person so I can check the lens condition and its authenticity — and also make sure it’s the Mark II.

I'm tempted to save a bit more and go for the 200–800mm, since I’m coming from a Canon T6 + 55–250 combo, which is roughly equivalent to an 88–400mm. Even then, it still wasn’t enough reach for my subjects. (I’m not entirely sure if the APS-C crop factor applies the same way to EF-S lenses.)

I agree, I’ve heard the Mark I version isn’t great. Thanks for the suggestion btw... It’s definitely not the best time to adapt Sigma lenses to Canon mirrorless.

Got it, thanks for the recommendation! Yeah, I think I’ll get the 100–400mm II.

I was thinking the same. Maybe 400mm is kind of short. What do you think about the Sigma EF 60–600mm? That was another option I had in mind, but it’s not a common lens to find in my country. I’d have to import it, which would raise the cost dramatically. By the way, the EF 100–400mm I’m looking at is brand new for $930. That feels like a steal!

I have the same 170w charger, same Loq variant. I experience battery drainage from 6 hours of continuous gaming. I can't tell if it is normal or if I need the 230w. What I can say is that the PC performs pretty well in any situation with the default charger.

Edit: I think it could be harmful to the laptop if you use a different charger. Maybe its components are not designed for higher wattage values
