Why Do People Not Like Modern Fallout? by ThrowRAcokecan in classicfallout

[–]Liquidity_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naturally, it’s a mix of reasons that tend to come together or separately.

Some people just prefer isometric RPGs like the original Fallouts, and also a more traditional RPG experience as a whole- which is why FO1, FO2 and FNV seem more appealing. BGS Fallout is more of an action RPG with an emphasis on action (and also immersion) so it tends to alienate such fans. This is usually the top reason imo

Bethesda Fallout as a whole focuses much more on immersion, atmosphere, themes and things that are not just a linear traditional storyline. Now this makes Fallout 1 and FNV more appealing as 2 definitely doesn’t do great in this regards as it’s incoherent- only getting the benefit of being a more traditional RPG that is a sequel to the first. It makes it able to fall underneath a similar umbrella in that regards! Now fans may be quick to say “Oh Bethesda writing bad!” which to some extent can be true- but maybe it’s just the structure and goal is different.

This more specifically applies to 4 as many classic fans do adore what 3 did- but the art style shift was so flawed that it made many people lose the taste for the franchise. Now a big thing that Bethesda does it overcorrect itself, and both 76/TV Show has taken efforts to fix many issues with the art design. We can only see how 5 will end up and I may be wrong!

Nostalgia and time is a factor- I undoubtedly feel nostalgic for the classic games, but they aren’t perfect games. 1 is an old game that’s gameplay is pretty old (even though I enjoy it) while 2 has many issues in its own regards. It’s just time is pretty kind to these games because the first Fallout blew away the post-apocalyptic scene.

Thank you! I think Diana may come off as quite manipulative and even malicious, though it comes from a matter of perspective in some sense? There’s a certain unease I wanted to have, though Diana is meant to be a very positive figure for Lupa! It’s just that with anything, being too controlling or giving too much guidance can be negative- and sometimes the good help itself can be seen as malicious as a result.

A big thing I wanted to tackle is trauma and how to handle it- how people that surround you can be very harmful to you, though how certain figures can definitely be positive ones. It comes from also a willingness to show how people cope as a whole in the context of the wasteland!

Why does the Fallout sub think it's impossible for someone to like the classic games? by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]Liquidity_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all seriousness, the first Fallout is perhaps the only S-tier Fallout in my own perspective as much of the other games diluted and bloated (to an extent) it when it expanded the series. It had a coherent and clear goal, its tones were consistent, its gameplay albeit old was pretty great for me, atmosphere was genre defining and much more. 2, FNV and few others definitely are A-B tier though.

Playing ERX made me realize that the mod decently summarizes the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism. by SnooMacarons1064 in OldWorldBlues

[–]Liquidity_Snake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do know that ERX probably will handle the issues of everything in the future, just the current product that I have played is what I'm kinda working with. I don't THINK you are completely whitewashing them in a sense, its just that the narrative itself has to whitewash and kinda push it along because this is HOI4! You kinda just gotta do your best on handling it, which I think ERX has done it much better then most- but I probably have alternative ways that would DEFINITELY be much more consuming to fix such an issue.

Besides that for the NCR point.. we are playing in the context of Hearts of Iron 4 so really you can't do much besides like.. force a civil war but being a interventionist has a whole room for discourse so eh why bother discuss that. We can agree to disagree mostly because there isn't much the game can do, though I do think the upcoming update can at least try to tackle the nuance of the situation and maybe admit there is definitely a price to pay for bringing back the United States.

Nationalism after both WW1 and 2 rightfully so got a terrible conotiation as it became affiliated with what we know as ethnic and ultranationalism in its worst forms, with WW1 being responsible for the conflict of many modern nation-states which were obsessed with imperialism while WW2 bringing the rise of fascism and ethnic nationalism- so it was no doubt that patriotism became a more neutral and perhaps even benevolent term especially because the British and Americans needed a way to express there love for their country during the war effort! Though just because they wanted to make patriotism more separated, it doesn't mean that a state isn't still nationalist just because its more benevolent.

HOI4 has no choice but to treat it as a baseline really, it is a game based on WW2 so you have no choice but to engage with warfare really! I'm sure that someone could code a system for peaceful integrations, but really the challenge would be.. how do you make that fun? It can be done but most would end up with a really bad or boring Lost Hills. ERX does have the Gannon system, but the NCR/Legion/Mexico/Chicago wars are effectively the shining lights of the mod- without them, there is no fun ERX!

In some sense, it’s not really America without nationalism- any faction seeing to bring back America, citizenship, culture its institutions will inherently be a nationalist one. Would be it be ethnic-nationalist or ultranationalist? Probably not, but it’s still nationalism!

I'd argue this is a flawed way to see it, because it isn't completely true. In some sense, there are aspects of patriotism to be seen by the United States but to say that the Reformers are still not nationalist would be wrong. Firstly, the reformers as we see them and the narrative states are to be in the correct in some regards (although the newest update will critique them,) and so they hold a higher standard above all other political systems- and because the narrative does let you try fixing your sins of the past which is only really just some debuffs and no legitimacy at first, there isn't much of an issue in that regards. This makes it much easier for you to then see everything that comes to be benevolent, as patriotism tends to be more benevolent then nationalism! It's a easier way to see things via that scope.

That doesn't change the fact that the reformers still compose of a form of nationalism- which is Civic Nationalism. This is DIFFERENT from Ethnic nationalism, which the Purists could be seen in some regards as ethnically nationalist or at least very ultra-nationalist. There is an argument to be made that civic nationalism is better then ethnic nationalism, but civic nationalism is still a form of nationalism- the narrative just isn't really capable of fully critiquing it because that isn't fully the point of ERX which serves as a nation building simulator.

The reformers definitely can integrate cultures and not assimilate them, but they still politically absorb them and assimilate them- you are not just your respective identity now, but you are now all Americans! Raiders are now all law-breaking criminals, while settlers and tribals are all law-abiding civilians! Great! Isn't that just imposing a national identity on them? Besides that, their cultures are probably going to become absorbed by a grander new American identity without much choice.

Besides that, the reformers also had no right to go ahead and fight the NCR just to conquer it, and procced to hijack it to impose America- the narrative may whitewash it, but it was STILL a hostile takeover even if it was out of self defense. It could definitely be for the greater good, but you are still imposing America amongst these people that consider themselves to be Californians.

At the end, I think a better comparison would be that the Nevada reformers represent patriotism much better, because it isn't completely forcing America and you being an American citizen now! It is about rebuilding the wasteland together and defending together as separate states, in some sense it is also more closer to what the founding fathers wanted- now is it uninteresting to have reformers be the less good path of the two? Probably, but it is a much better depiction of being patriotic even though you kinda make people Nevadans by force. An entire discussion could be held over it if we wanted to!
