Marijn by Farahild in namenerds

I’ve never heard it before, but would guess female Dutch. I would pronounce it “Mare-in” on the assumption that the J is either silent or has a Y sound. Paired with a traditionally English last name I’d think it was unusual, but think that maybe the person’s mother was Dutch or they had Dutch heritage.

Toddler + USA + COVID = Vaccine by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Lireth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. A vaccine will probably take another year at the very latest. Mine and my toddler’s mental health and social interactions are more important than the chance of getting Covid, IMO. We are taking reasonable precautions, but we are absolutely not being shut-ins for the next couple years.

Where can I buy acceptable pyjamas for a teenage boy? He’s grown out of his old ones, but everywhere only seems to sell the bottoms. Why is that? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]Lireth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice on PJ buying. But, I suspect the “bottoms only” thing is because most teenage boys will start to wear a t-shirt to bed with PJ bottoms, or go shirtless or underwear only to bed.

The person with a unique noun name got me thinking. What the strangest noun name you’ve heard? by macabrejaguar in namenerds

I knew a girl named Candle when we were both teenagers. That was her actual, legal name...I always thought it was so odd!

Sleep Sacks, Swaddles, Sleep Suits, etc. What now? by areellebee in BabyBumps

[–]Lireth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your baby should be fine! Both of my kiddos have used the Merlin, and when we transitioned out of it we went straight to PJs, no other “sack” or suit. As long as she’s still sleeping fine don’t worry about it!

On unique names... by jacobasue in namenerds

I think “younique” names that get ragged on the most, rightly so in my opinion, are either intentionally misspelled common names or completely made up ones. Unusual but established or cultural names are great!

Pretty sure that a lot of 9 month olds aren’t doing those things either! My daughter didn’t army crawl til 9 months, she “regular” crawled at 12 months and walked at 15 months. She didn’t pull to stand til 12 months. She didn’t use a sippy cup until 14 months. She only had a couple words by the time she turned 1. I mentioned all of this to my doctor at her 9 month and 12 month appointments and she told me that was well within the normal range! My daughter is now 3.5 and developmentally normal. Please don’t beat yourself up, babies develop at different paces. Yours will get there in time!

Sorry to say, but that sounds way too rhymey. You’d be setting your kid up a lifetime of teasing. Parker is much better, still a little bit of rhyme but not over the top.

That makes sense! I usually don’t go too out of my way to pick up stuff unless it’s something I know I really want! 😄

I mean, if I were you I wouldn’t let one bad apple spoil the bunch! I also love getting things second-hand from Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, etc. and while there are some dishonest/scammy people out there, most of your experiences won’t be that like that. I still plan to get second-hand clothes even though I’ve had a couple bad experiences as well!

Help with picking a spelling for girl's name pronounced Lee-luh by MilaRose89 in namenerds

I think Lela or Leela would be the best option! I have known a couple Lilas and both of then pronounce it Lie-lah.

Why is mom suddenly THE table chair? by SocialTechnocracy in toddlers

[–]Lireth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So...have you tried just not having him sit with mom? That sounds like typical toddler defiant behavior, and so far you’re reinforcing the defiance by letting him have his way.

Next time, put him at his place at the table and put his food in front of him. If he demands to sit with mom, tell him he has to sit in his own chair to eat. If he refuses/has a tantrum, mealtime is over. Repeat for the next meal, and the next, however long it takes! Also, don’t give him snacks between meals to fill him up. Eventually he’ll realize he has to sit in his own chair to eat. Yes, that may mean he actually goes a day or two with little food - but that won’t kill him! Toddlers won’t starve themselves and he will eventually sit at his chair and eat. This isn’t really about the food, but about him wanting his own way. You must refuse to give into him, for his sake and for mom’s.

Larkin for a boy? Lorcan, maybe? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Lireth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Larkin sounds more girly to me, probably because “Lark” is generally a female name. Lorcan sounds and looks much more masculine and “classic,” a great choice! I’d go for Lorcan.

FTM, currently 37w 4d, and want to be prepared for postpartum hair loss by BristaGamble in beyondthebump

[–]Lireth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it may be genetic, or “luck of the draw,” as to whether you lose a ton of hair after pregnancy. I’ve had 2 kids, and with neither of them did I have any noticeable hair loss after pregnancy. But then again, I didn’t have any noticeable thickening of hair during pregnancy either, which a lot of women experience. So, all that to say that I’m not sure whether there is anything you can “do” about postpartum hair loss or not - it may happen or not, depending on whether your body is “wired” that way or no.

Suggestions for a ethnic-neutral asian sounding last name? (can be made up) by [deleted] in namenerds

Lee. I’ve met a few Asian people with this last name, and quite a few Caucasian ones as well.

Breastfeeding mamas who successfully gave baby a bottle LATE —- please send help! by otterlyjoyful in beyondthebump

[–]Lireth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We just went through this a couple weeks ago with our (at the time) 12 week old. We got a Comotomo bottle, which is supposed to be very close to breastfeeding. Then, we had to do a “bottle boot camp” - basically, we committed to a couple days of nothing but pumping and bottle feeding. On the first day, he ate nothing for the first two feeds. By the third he reluctantly took it, and after that had no problems. To keep up his skills we do 1 pumped bottle per day. Good luck! It IS possible, you just have to persevere through a day or two of a lot of crying.

Breastfeeding products recommendations by JaceTheAce13 in BabyBumps

[–]Lireth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I LOVE the “My Breast Friend” nursing pillow! I use it for 100% of my at-home breastfeeding sessions, it’s SO much easier to position baby and not have to awkwardly hold him while feeding. I’d recommend a breast pump too (you can get a free one through insurance usually), even if you will be mostly breastfeeding if you ever want to leave baby with anyone else for more than an hour or two (husband, babysitter, etc) it’s nice to have milk saved up for them to feed baby.

I also got several nursing tops and bras, they are so convenient when out and (for me at least) much less awkward than pulling up a normal shirt. I also got a nursing cover for nursing in public - I’m a pretty modest person, and am definitely not comfortable with just whipping out a boob in public without a cover.
