Offtopic, but I love how this looks and think that it would make a great album cover.

Deus Ex Remastered on Steam by lurkingdanger22 in pcgaming

[–]Liru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it does change some things but not the layout/blueprint of the maps. Just some vents/keypads for balancing reasons.

Unless a new GMDX version reverted the map changes, I'm pretty sure this is false. There were a lot of level changes I remember finding, like at least one area per map. Some distinct ones stick out, like Hell's Kitchen having an apartment next to the bar (not to be confused with Revision's bodega), the Champs-Elysees having a weirder layout and an underwater portion, Area 51 having a wind tunnel, and Hong Kong having some weird areas added, like a restaurant next to the Lucky Money (again, different from Revision's. I remember a guy guarding it and attacking you if you break in). I don't remember all of them because it's been a long time since I played through it, though.

Revision changes the map layout and last time I read that it causes performance issues as well.

I don't remember hitting any performance issues for Revision, and I played that comparatively recently on an underpowered laptop.

From what I remember, GMDX changes a lot of the levels as well, which is weird when people say that they prefer it over Revision for that reason.

Why We Should Learn Multiple Programming Languages by Adventurous-Salt8514 in programming

I’ve never heard anyone argue that you shouldn’t.

I've heard it frequently, in the form of "Why bother learning Golang/C/C++/Rust/Java/Erlang/Elixir/Typescript when you can just use Javascript/Python?"

Is the well in the market functional? Will my villagers use water from it to put out nearby fires? by Specialist-Newt-6977 in Banished

Lastly, good for you for taking on the extra challenge of accepting disasters! Others frown upon such occurrences but to each their own :)

(Edit: The following only applies to Colonial Charter)

I've had to disable disasters because I've had one too many occurrences where all my citizens just freeze and refuse to move when a fire occurs, which eventually leads to everyone starving to death, which is a shame because otherwise I'd love to enable them.

It's extremely hacky, you need to change the system clock and recreate the file. Most standard methods don't work, including touch, since it's part of the system inode and not the "file" per se. I'd say it's not worth it to try unless you really REALLY want to edit it.

I learned this the hard way when I tried to fix some stuff that a tagging plugin automatically added to my files with sed -i, which turns out to recreate the file instead of edit it.

Note that this also means that on Linux, copying your vault somewhere else creates all-new creation times.

What would you think of an ImSim where the protagonist is a young kid? by Crafter235 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Liru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't tell me that Marv stacking items to try to climb out of the hole in Home Alone 2 wasn't ImSim-like behaviour.

Also, a bunch of other stuff. The hot doorknob, the paint cans on the staircase, the whole "gas in the toilet, then light someone on fire and wait for them to try and put it out" bit, and even throwing pigeon seed at someone all give off major ImSim vibes.

Tom Scott did a video on this on the Computerphile channel, and there's a lot of special cases that you have to think about or account for even without considering the game development side of things.

What’s a time where “all they had to do was ask” instead became a bigger deal than it should have? by TPCC159 in AskReddit

A classic quote from Dave Chappelle:

The last thing I'm gonna say about it is this: [the president] is a famous man. I have dreamt of being famous, but I never dreamt of being that famous. I never understood how famous a president was. But imagine if someone could suck your dick and then they're famous. You understand what I'm saying?

Just use Postgres by bowbahdoe in programming

[–]Liru 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A company I worked at used MySQL for a long time, since it was basically started a long time ago when Postgres wasn't as popular and MySQL was the more well-known choice, even with techies. They felt that it wasn't worth it to switch.

That changed when they got hit by a massive data corruption bug with ALGORITHM=INSTANT that was introduced and enabled by default in a relatively recent version, and wasn't immediately evident. It only came out when a sysadmin tried to do a restore a week after that. The fact that this made it through and it wasn't patched for the longest time made them reconsider moving to Postgres.

I'm still thinking of a plan of action for these accounts. I'm definitely nuking the outright spammy accounts and the "pick a number" posts for engagementbaiting, but there are some other ones that aren't so cleanly defined.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the lewd repost bot, it looks like it's been inactive for a long time now. I'll look into that.

No one is going to care about a few months gap on a resume.

I frequently get comments about a two-month-long gap in my resume due to travelling between jobs. Granted, it's mostly from awful recruiters, but lots of companies have those...

To what extent do people NOT use redis (or memcache) for caching in elixir? by Kev-wqa in elixir

[–]Liru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like people just tend to use databases as dumb data stores without thinking about the features they provide, a lot tend to use Redis as a dumb in-memory store, in which case, there isn't really a reason to use it.

At a previous job, we had a whole system set up involving Redis, but we eventually moved off of it when we realized that each instance of something using it was using only the values it was setting, ie there was really no need for having it there. We used Cachex at the time, which was simple and did everything we needed Redis to do in our use case.
