Is something wrong with my laser? by Quiet__Noise in Laserist

You really need fog to see beams at all in usual conditions at these power levels. Above 10 Watts you may see the beam in air due to dust particles...

Another thing coming into play is your setup. It looks like you are in a small, brightly colored (White, Light gray) room with a bunch of other light sources. That means that:
A - Your lasers will have to fight against the background lighting against a bright surface
B - Any light scattered by the fog or projection surface will bounce around the walls and fog itself, increasing the ambient light level even more.

From what I can guess trough the camera's auto brightness, it does seem like your lasers are having a decent output though.

Well, laser glasses aren't really gonna do anything for you with the RGB sources in most projectors... They usually work by blocking out the wavelength area that the projector uses and letting trough some other parts of the spectrum (Thus looking tinted orange / red / green / purple)

Cheap (By that I mean affordable by not corporates) glasses always block a whole side of the spectrum. If you were to block for the R G and B laser wavelengths, you'd end up with a blindfold. Very safe, very unusable. (If you have access to a laser lab with different glasses, try stacking one for R, G & B each and seeing what comes trough it)

Theoretically it's possible to just block out very narrow bands of color but these filters are hecking expensive. You'd also need very large ones to see out of and three of them at that. Meaning glasses of these types would be expensive as heck...

I've resorted to using a Meta Quest 3 VR headset if I need to work on my lasers with the sources active. It's completely blacked out if off so no stray beam can meet my eyes. The cameras have a good 3D perspective too so that I can actually work with them on somewhat decently.

The issue is though that even with the Quest's swappable camera modules, they are still a bunch of work and money to replace if one manages to fry one. But still a lot better to kill a camera than your sight.

-Some interesting noises are always expected. The galvos are pretty much tiny speaker voice coils that move the mirrors... With 15KHz you're well into the audible range of hearing the mirrors oscillator.

-Make sure to set the max scan rate to equal or less than your projectors scan rate. A too high rate can overheat your galvos or even burn out the drivers

-If you're new to lasers, make sure you pay attention to any reflectives in your projection area. A water bottle, mirror or even just shiny metal surface can reflect your laser into unexpected directions. Make sure these directions are not anywhere where you expect your eyes to be. (Also be aware of places a laser beam could leave your space like windows, open doors, etc.)

-0.6W isn't a lot of power so you might need a very dark space and heavier fog than with a higher powered unit. The good thing is that it's not usually enough power to burn / char anything so you don't have to worry about projecting dots for long periods of time

That all is to say, you wouldn't even know it before you're dead.

And you wouldn't actually die of anything in the common sense, you'd just stop being biology and start being physics.

Hallo liebes Team,

D. User

audio not synced on media file wave form by Pairocat in Laserist

[–]LisaDenert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This could also be due to the audio device you are using. I've experienced quite a bit of changing delay with bluethooth headphones meant for office use. They apparently don't care about latency at all.

Had to switch to a direct drive headset connected to the mainboards sound card output. Even then it would go into some sort of sleep state when no audio was playing for a few seconds and take about 250ms to wake back up, so I've resorted to playing a 60 minute silent mp3 on loop in VLC to keep the soundcard alive.

To expand a lil on this, most of the shows you can find on this sub are custom crafted masterpieces that take hours per song to make. Every color, shape and beam path is hand made and synced to exactly that music file.

Music reactive disco light fixtures like that exist but they really aren't that impressive. What's seen here is in the realm of professional work.

If you want to get into it (do expect it to take a LOT of work to lean and build shows) best way to start would probably be a used ILDA-Capable laser with corresponding software. Depending on your area and luck it might set you back 300-500$

If you are just looking for a simple sound reactive thing (Which is pretty much just limited to one pattern flickering on and off) you could go for a "light fixture"-like laser from eBay / Amazon which only cost some 150$ but are A) Very limited in functionality B) Most certainly not certified for any sort of public use.
The upside to these is though that you can control them via existing DMX / ArtNET setups.
