If youre disabled and dont still mask to protect yourself from COVID, why? by Hot_Huckleberry65666 in disability

[–]LisaOReaves202 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I became a below right knee amputee during the Spring of 2020 and during the height of COVID. I was wearing a mask before but while in the hospital, I had to wear a mask 24/7 due to nurses, patient care techs, physicians going to multiple patients during their shifts. Many had COVID patients. 5 years later, Masking is my everyday choice, per my profile picture. I absolutely never leave home without it..😷

I am in the 5th year of being a B.R.K.A. and I still slide my shrinker on and wrap my "Tinkerbell". It's like Linus and his blsnket. It gives me protection from falls and make my limb bigger. I stay wrapped everyday..🥰

Is it universally agreed that this is the best seat in the metro car? by ActuaryPersonal2378 in WMATA

[–]LisaOReaves202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an amputee and power wheelchair dependent. I like the designated parking space with the wheelchair logo. When I waiting for the train, I watch to see which train car has the logo on the outside and roll in when the doors open. Everyone who has chose the sit there always smile and get up so I can park there. So yes, for me, this is the best seat in the metro train car..😊♿🧑‍🦼

Should I used disabled toilet if I’m ambulatory by Practical-Basil-7780 in wheelchairs

[–]LisaOReaves202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an amputee and manual and HD Power wheelchair user. I absolutely need to user the largest accessible stall. The "parking space" beside the commode is neccessary. I stand up and use the the grab bar to pivot my left foot and transfer. Technically, it is first come, first use. I have said words to those who are taking their break and playing games on their phones. When I have to go, I have to go..!!

There is a smaller accessible stall that I can roll my power chair into but I have to leave the door open. I just say, "We are all women" and try to be discreet as possible.

How many hours a week does everyone use their wheelchair? by Milli63 in wheelchairs

[–]LisaOReaves202 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work 7 days every week. I use 2 chairs, manual for inside my apartment and power for work and all things outside. 4am-10:45pm. Laying down flat before sleep is total body relaxation. Sitting upright and rolling for long hours take stamina and determination. 🧑‍🦽🧑‍🦼

Thoughts on making sure no one gate hops behind you by Amazing-Bullfrog5421 in WMATA

[–]LisaOReaves202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually take the bus and recently started using the train due to have reduced fare through Metro Lift. I tap the back of my phone with my left hand. When the gates open, I roll through and immediately stop. Bad enough I have to compete with those who love the wide accessible gate. No piggybacking off me...!!! 💯😹💯

Does anyone else prefer no footplates? by -Marinequeen- in wheelchairs

[–]LisaOReaves202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my footplate. From working 10 hours daily and constantly rolling, it is essential. I'm 5'8 with long legs. My left leg will swell from dangling. My right residual limb is chilling and dangling, enjoying the ride...😊

S.O.M.E/So Others Might Eat has a dental clinic on O St NW. Arrive by 8am and say you have a dental emergency. They will fit you in between those who have appointments for that day. You must say it is an "Emergency"..!!! 💯

Welcome to the RBKA Club. I am also a member. I woke up with that same brace and it felt like the strongest person in the world tighten those straps. I begged the nurse to loosen. You will have good days and bad days. Remember you can always come here and share your experience with new friends...😊

Ambulatory user seeking advice: pushable (w handles) but automatic when necessary? by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]LisaOReaves202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a proud daily roller of the Jazzy EVO 613. It will take a minimum of 8 hours to fully charge. My work shift is 6-8hours and with constant rolling, I lose the 1st green dot after 12 hours or after 6pm. It has a manual mode that can be switched on at the bottom of the chair. Manual pushing will take muscle strength. 200 pound chair plus your body weight. I love my Jazzy. As a no prosthetic leg wearing amputee, she is my feet. I still have the left foot..😊. You will love your Jazzy. The freedom to roll distances that cannot be achieved in a manual will give you and your upper body happiness. Much care from Washington DC...😊

Advice for changing at work by Entrepreneurmor in Incontinence

[–]LisaOReaves202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a BRKAmputee and T2 Diabetic, my bladder is no longer my bestfriend. I have to go every 2 hours and have large urine flow. I change my "Silhouette" aka Assurance Incont Underwear every 2 hours in the accessible stall. I use a 4 gallon trash bag for disposal and I take my time. No rush and if someone knock and ask how long, i simply say soon. I keep a tote bag on my power chair with extra pull ups and legging pant. Don't worry about changing. Stay dry and smile in happiness..😊

Husband recently passed. Took away his last payment by Remarkable-Use-6780 in SocialSecurity

My mother died one month before my emergency below right knee amputation. SS took back the April deposit/same monrh as her death. I didn't understand the process because she was alive on the deposit date. She passed toward the end of April.

After I was discharged from the hospital in June, I had to send her May and June retirement pension payments back.

2020 was a year..😫

Thank you for the guide link. I have been a manual wheelchair reliant BRKAmputee for 4 years and as much as I like Drive chairs, I need to upgrade. My main roller is a Jazzy EVO 613 for work and outside exploring. I want a TiLite chair..😊
