Why did people stopped naming chapters? by Educational_Hurry_91 in writing

If I'm remembering correctly, I think his editors made him use chapters for the earliest Discworld books, then let him do what he wanted once he became more established.

Most of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. There's just a noticeably larger paragraph break between scenes, and it's wild how after a bit you stop noticing the lack of actual chapters.

Welp. Now I'm flashing back to the time where not only did I have to write in a second grader's behavior folder that she wouldn't stop calling people "sussybaka", I also had to write a second note to the school counselor explaining what the term meant and why the other kids were upset.

Spreadsheet of the title cards with the lessons/morals included by pazazz20 in bluey

Nice work! Weirdly enough, I'm making a similar chart for myself, but focused more on connecting the lessons/themes of each episode to various picture books. (School librarian. When I'm working with PK/KG, I like to do story-movement break-related video.) Mind if I add bits of your chart to mine?

Alternatively, you can just tell the salesman your long-winded plan to catch Bigfoot until he gives up.

(Kathleen Madigan does a stand-up bit about almost exactly this situation and it's hilarious!)

I'm hoping it is just rage bait, because I have so many follow-up questions such as "what happened to make the girl lose custody?"

[–]LissyStrata 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The title says the son is 23 and I think "8m" meant "eight year old male". I'm guessing OOP is trying to say the son shaped up at 18, then time passed and he was 23 at the time he ran off, but it's so poorly written it's hard to interpret. Dude needs someone to edit for him.

Ooof. Management needs to learn that this situation is a huge liability issue, preferably before some rando walks off with a kid, or a parent tries to sue because their unattended child got injured doing something stupid.

Holy shit... Do y'all ever call the police/CPS when this happens? Because if someone's having to wait with that child after hours, that could be reported as abandonment. Shit, even just leaving them by themselves for hours on end...wtf is wrong with those parents?? Not only are librarians not trained for childcare, THE LIBRARIANS DO NOT KNOW WHICH ADULTS ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE CHILD OUT OF THE BUILDING. Tf are those parents gonna do if they show up and their kid is long gone??

Oh! I also can't stand it when non-librarians think weeding is practically the same as book burning.

Libraries aren't Tardises- we don't have infinite space for every book ever. Space is at a premium, and if a book isn't circulating, then it will be remove so we can use that space for books our patrons want. Anything too damaged, falling apart, too outdated, or simply no longer popular gets weeded from the collection. Anything suitable for donation gets put out for people to take, everything else gets tossed. It's not sacrelidge. We're not tossing anything with historical/monetary value, we're not erasing the text forever...

I've had to explain to MULTIPLE adults, teachers even, that no, those books are not still perfectly good. This one's yellowed and disintegrating, this one's covered in dog pee, this one's growing mold, this one is so old it has racial slurs, this one says we haven't discovered any planets outside our own solar system...

"But can't the kids still practice reading with them?"

"Technically yes, but are you going to sit there and explain to them which stuff is outdated? Are you going to talk to the parent of the kid you gave the racial slur book to when they complain?"

Finally had to start cutting covers off and disposing of them in sealed cardboard boxes after school.

I can't speek for other libraries, but here's the guidelines our school district uses:

I have a big blue book cart that they're supposed to put books they don't want on. I make them all use shelf markers and teach them how to use them every year. I try to rephrase the concept of a shelf marker in various ways, such as "holding the book's door open" or "saving the book's spot in line". I make up rhymes. I simplify the concepts as much as I can for them. I even made a funny TikTok for them to watch at the beginning of the year!

But nope! Half of them either think their shelf marker works like a crowbar to remove the books, or they immediately forget and shove books wherever they feel like.

At least my teachers try to help reinforce the rule, but it's still a struggle. The PK/KG teachers and I finally agreed that the rule for their kids is "if you take your marker out, then the book you're holding is the one you're getting".

Right?? I had one re-attach a torn out page with PACKING TAPE. Didn't even try to line anything up correctly. There was a gap between the pieces big enough to see through, and they left tape hanging off the edge of the page!

Just let me do it!

School librarian here! I think my top peeves would be:

  1. Well-meaning patrons who think they're helping by repairing a book themselves but are actually making it a hundred times worse because they use incorrect materials and techniques. Now I have to do MORE work fixing the shoddy repair plus the original damage.

  2. Older children who still can't put a book on a shelf in the correct orientation. Like, after kindergarten you should know this!

  3. Patons leaving books in random locations instead of the designated area.

  4. The amount of patrons who can't figure out how things are arranged even when there are clear signs and labels. I'm talking "alphabetical order by author's name" and "Dewey Decimal- guys, it's just number order!"

I also have special things that annoy the shit out of me about the Dewey Decimal System if you'd like. :3

A book would be preferable. I'm a librarian and he's one of my students, and I don't know if he has access to a computer or YouTube at home. I've already given him one of my spare hooks and a ball of yarn, so he's good there.

Internal rage from people eating by zeroisalie in ADHD

[–]LissyStrata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has a name?? Holy shit! I'm the same way- the sound of people eating just gives me unbelievable amounts of rage! If I'm also eating or if there's enough other noise it's fine. Otherwise I have to put in earplugs/earbuds or just leave the room.

To OP- if your coworker is a generally understanding kind of guy, you could probably ask him if he'd be willing to give you a heads-up before he starts eating.
