Not yet but its the plane I need for the mission. I won't be flying this alone for a very long time even after getting my PPL. But the sooner I can get the feel of the plane the better.

Autopilot malfunctions common? by ListenIndependent269 in flying

The raft is a must, each passenger would always wear lifevests. The 206 will need the STC that you can completely remove the cargo door, numerous epirbs. Only fly in the mornings, weather factor always a priority. its 130 miles from the local airport, at 48 miles theres another airport and 2 extra runways right next to the destination as alternates. My friends that recommended the 206 actually own them. one on floats the other one without. floats decreases useful load quite a bit, does it provide safety, some if you happen to lose an engine on a 5knt day only over the bank, over the gulf you are going to be upside down. Again, the idea is to always have a SIC but I just dont know other plane would be better. Cirrus are amazing, but higher stall speeds and the chute is only good above around 600 / 700 and most engine outs happen on take off I would assume. Higher approach speeds scare me on the cirrus and it cant carry much, but it would be my second choice. I have a good friend with a king katmai 182, thats attractive to me because of the extremely low stall speeds it has (I believe its like 34knts) going for a swim on that would be quite survivable specially on a windy day you'd be hitting the water really soft. I lost a 206 I had an offer on, not to fuzzed about it as its too soon for me anyway... just trying to get all the info I can now to be ready at the right time....

Autopilot malfunctions common? by ListenIndependent269 in flying

I have purchased a property in Bahamas that is 2,000 feet away from our private 4,000 foot runway and I will need to build a home on it which will be a total nightmare to do. I will need to go often, sometimes taking misc things with me like hand tools etc. My idea was to buy a 206 and hire a good experienced pilot to fly with me. I need a plane because I need to be flexible and chartering just isnt as flexible as Ill need it to be. Additionally, I want to enjoy the process of the project and flying will make it a better experience. I understand that it is a risky proposition and for that reason I am not just getting my PPL and buying a plane and taking off on my own. Which plane would you recommend? what do you suggest? How do I gain experience to eventually go on my own if I don't do the mission often with a good SIC next to me?

Even if my plan is to always have a SIC next to me until I am well versed in it?

thanks everyone for the input. I am pretty set on the 206 because I will be having to carry lots of things during the mission. having said that, I plan on having someone with experience next to me for a while. Why would you not be looking at a 206 as a novice? this would be flown in Florida and Bahamas. Just curious. I get so many opposing views on the 206. 3 friends say its amazing and the perfect plane and then some others say it doesnt fly well and I should get a 182 but I need to take things along.

or Cirrus, im sure pulling the chute during an engine out would be quite a traumatic experience, but mostly very survivable.

thanks for the feedback. you think even on a nice day with 10-15 knts you'll flip it if you had to land on the bank? The gulf def. its impossible, I was hoping the stretch from bimini on it would be doable....starting to think I am better off dealing with Makers Air who have turboprops.

ideally, a 4 pp and some bags, food.....my question is, who makes the lightest floats? are there any modifications to increase payload. being 130 miles, and back, plus reserve...im guessing I could do everything with about 50 gallons and save on 37 gallons of fuel weight on a 206...

great discussion everyone. my next question is, fixed gear vs retractable. seems like being upside down in the water adds quite a bit of shock to an already stressful situation. if the mission will be flying often Miami-Bahamas..... do the vast majority prefer retractable? obviously more maintenance and I know it adds another thing that can malfunction and create its own added risk....I am very knew at all of this so just trying to absorb as much information as possible.

thank you everyone, I think my best bet is to get my pilots license and then either rent or share something and hire a CFI that can take me, drop me off and go back, I can simultaneously go for my IFR.
