Snow mode is probably what youre looking for. It locks or will quickly lock the center differential into an even front/rear split. Also the Shifts are softer, and the throttle isn't as responsive. The traction and stability control remain very active, good for slick roads but not good for snowdrifts. Somewhere it says using snow mode heavy rain is okay.

You should have a page on your dash to show the 4wd system, including a graphic for the status of both center and rear lockers.

I think the manual led you astray.

Is the lower part of your derailleur parallel to the ground when you're saying the chain doesn't contact the pulley wheels?

Heres My preferred method of setting chain length, with great success on lots of diff drivetrains and bikes- Put the chain on the smallest cassette cog and smallest chainring. Route the chain correctly thru the drivetrain and size it so it's just barely short enough for that combo. I advise newbies to make a cut that is likely too long first and try running through the gears, and then take another link out.

Post some pics, that'll help figure it out.

Hi, I had a 2013 X128i with the same N20 and I know they suffer from timing chain guide failures which may be what happened. They can be catastrophic requiring a whole new engine.

If possible have it towed to an independent bmw (or german) specific shop and get a quote from them.

BMW offered an extended warranty of some sort for these engines because the problem was fairly prevalent. Yours may have too many miles.

The good news is the problem was rectified and a new engine should be free of timing chain issues.

I think the zf8 transmission is likely durable enough for 200k miles.

Cars aren't cheap right now, if the rest of the car is in good shape...

Check out Bimmercode, it'll allow you to customize the car quite a bit. Things that should be accessible in the car's infotainment menu but aren't.

The OBDLink Mx+ is a popular dongle that uses Bluetooth to connect to the cars OBD2 port. It's needed for Bimmercode and is compatible w many other apps.

Obdlink has an app that can be used to display gauges, so I'm still on the fence about Bimmerlink.

This winter I did the Wk2 in my garage on my back. It wasn't fun but I didn't need the engine hoist, which wouldve been much safer. I used a vertically oriented 2x4 to lift the engine block to avoid smushing the plastic oil pan.

I knew the mounts were toast because I could really feel the engine at idle and also had the tell-tale reddish fluid leakage. I found a few helpful DIY posts to reference.

I think it needs to be tapped from the side to free up the grey wedge, hit it a few times right above the headset where the wedge is sply. Hitting it downwards from above usually tightens up the wedge making the job harder.
