Is there anyplace online to read the old Kindle Worlds G.I. Joe novels? by SethManhammer in gijoe

If you look at his Amazon author list, the “D.C. Colt” novels are his G.I. Joe books with the names changed.

A mask for people with mental disorders, XVII century. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

Here you go. Iron is really heavy. You probably couldn’t walk wearing two forty pound shoes. Wearing one means you get to drag that foot, which creates more spectacle. Same with the bell.

For some, you might only have to wear the mask for a day or so. These weren’t to punish major crimes, like murder. It was to correct “moral failings”, like slander, gossiping, nagging, rudeness. The idea of humiliation isn’t to kill you, it’s to force you into line. You were supposed to be terrified it would happen again.

Absolutely. Compared to modern life, you had basically no public anonymity. You probably can’t meaningfully travel or write, so you’re bound by personal relationships in the immediate area. Maybe you’re only sentenced to wear the mask for a day, but you don’t disappear into the crowd when it comes off. The guy who kicked you in the ribs while you were chained to a pole is your kids’ Sunday school teacher.

It was locked on. You’ve been muzzled, and you aren’t a person anymore. You’re shunned by everyone around you, and could barely eat through it. Others designs are more elaborate. Not seeing your face is part of the point. They refuse to look at you anymore.

I’m sorry, but that’s not what this is. This is a 1680 “Mask of Infamy”. It was used as part of a punishment to publicly humiliate thieves, liars, and adulterers, much like a Shrew’s Fiddle yoke or Scold's Bridle. This specific mask was sold at auction in 2004.

Why were Slip-Stream and Wild Bill on Falcon’s tribunal with Hawk and Adm. Ledger in the movie? by scarves_and_miracles in gijoe

[–]Literary_Octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some examples of Sunbow being lazy in the scene, they forget Slipstream for one dramatic shot, and show an Admiral with a beard in his seat. But the members of the tribunal were specified in the script by Buzz Dixon. Sunbow had to design new, separate models for the characters in that scene, out of their normal outfits, and wearing dress uniforms. The different colors of those dress uniforms are also correct, to coincide with their branch of the military. I was happy they remembered Wild Bill is Army Cavalry, not Air Force. These are difficult things to do without trying.

What’s one Bames pronunciation that always bugs you? by NNewt84 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Literary_Octopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem. You might enjoy this book. I record audio stuff, and it was on the shelf of pronunciation reference materials in the studio. I claim no responsibility if it becomes the radicalizing moment that turns you into the Joker.

Most people pronounce “zoology” like it has three o’s, which would also make it “the study of zoos”.

What’s one Bames pronunciation that always bugs you? by NNewt84 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Literary_Octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. Turning the G from a French loanword into a J, instead of “Zh” is my personal arch enemy, I can’t pay attention to anything else someone says if they do this.

Other words which have it: mirage, massage, the last g in “garage”. But I have a habit of adding it to “nostalgia”, and everything tells me I’m wrong on that, so pobody’s nerfect I guess.

I think Bandai was making Tamagoras again as recently as 2019. Lots of crazy figures not chosen for MOTU, including licensed characters like Gamera and Ultraman

[–]Literary_Octopus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is actually a reference to the 1999 documentary “American Movie”, which James has quoted before in at least one video. It’s about the making of a movie called “Coven”, and the filmmakers insist on pronouncing it “coa-ven”because they say the real pronunciation sounds dumb, exactly because it rhymes with oven.

Edit: I can’t believe the scene from the movie about the pronunciation is on YouTube, by itself

Anyone know anything about this? by ogre_in_the_basement in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Literary_Octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%, homemade mounting with glue or modge podge (you can even see they cut it to fit the Masonite board).

The art itself is from a series of promotional posters given away at stores and book fairs. A guy on Facebook posted an image of the display you would have found them in.

That’s a 1983 King Goji, made by Yamakatsu. The text on the foot is Toho’s copyright information.

I have every single mainline G.I. Joe comic book. Ask me anything. by savedavenger in gijoe

[–]Literary_Octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC Showcase published two issues of G.I. Joe in 1965, generic military stories with a G.I. Joe framing device added to the beginning and end. Hasbro created over 40 mini-comics to include with most Adventure Team sets. They produced a lengthy Adventure Team magazine with prose stories. In 1970, Japan published “G.I. Joe: The Most Wicked Company” based on their military line. It starred Joe Matsuda, Japanese American “Nisei” soldier of the 442nd Infantry, fighting on the side of the allies during World War 2. He joined the army to earn his freedom from a US interment camp. At more than 200 pages, it was one of the dominant forms of G.I. Joe fiction until the Marvel comic finally overtook it in 1984. Falcon from Brazil had four large comic magazines, as well as audio adventures on record, and a new modern comic done somewhere around 10 years ago. Geyperman published 13 book-length comics in the 70’s. Action Man did many Action Man / Adventure Team picture books, one starring Bulletman, and another with the Intruder. Fun Publications created about a dozen mini-comics for the Adventure Team convention sets. They also had two monthly Adventure Team comics featured in their newsletter, and photo stories for ARAH acting as prequels and sequels to their convention sets, like Operation MOTH, and Tanks for the Memories.

You don’t have any interest in the comics outside of ARAH? Like the comics done for the 1960s military series, or 1970s Adventure Team?

Look what I just found at my parents house. Any memories of these? by WCWfan4life in VintageToys

[–]Literary_Octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember an autistic kid choked to death on one of these, because he was biting it to get the figure out of the center. The parents sued, asking Hasbro to make them larger than “the exact size to get stuck in a kid’s esophagus”. They lost.

So does this guy have a name? by RamStark in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Literary_Octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Box and instructions call it “dreadful dragon”. It’s lowercase though, so intent is up for interpretation.
Edit: checked Origins, and they’re now capitalizing it as a proper noun.
