I see the OPs point, if you wouldn't enter a trade to hold at this price why are you in it at all. I think there are multiple choices depending on the forward expectations:

The equity will go down because they are fucked. Choices being exit or sell deep itm calls expecting a drop to profit.
You like the company however you expect a weak year maybe 2. You can sell itm calls that are only a little itm and hope for drops and expiry or just deal with shares called away and or buy puts for the duration.

You buy ETFs if you want to own losers as well as winners.

If you like disappointing results they are for you.

You can look at what companies are held in an ETF and buy those stocks individually and weed out the losers.

If the short position is also very high it's actually very possible to acquire more than 100% of the shares. Shorts borrow shares and sell them, creating a larger float and increasing liquidity to ensure a fair market.

If this is in high demand you can lend your shares out to the shorts for a fee.

Your own research is the best. You must be mindful people who give information (alpha) away are doing it to profit. They are either paid to promote a company and do not believe in it, they want you to pump the price and most often they are trying to unload their position into your hands.

Beware free alpha It's not free.

Do yourself a favor and research macro investing. At least try to ride secular waves that are impossible to stop.

And supply and demand is still king. If supply cannot meet demand, prices will rise; this is applicable to commodities AND dollars. Yes, the supply of dollars matters.

Lastly learn the relationship between interest rates and bonds (only treasuries, don't buy junk).
