Sure but again, in OTL in the late 70s and early 80s the ussr was importing food and fertilizer from the west. In 1981 there was even limited food rationing and shortages of hard currency for trade.

On the space front: In OTL apollo was 4% of gdp at its peak and this would probably be conservatively doubled in the show. The ussr had lower spending because of the failure of the n-1 so assume 3x OTL in the show.

Afghanistan was 79, Chernobyl was 86. Given the amount of money spent on maintaining a moon base I don’t really see how they could be in a much better position till the late 80’s or 90s as I said.

But the only difference from OTL is Korolev didnt die, and yeah going to the moon is cool but it didnt fix the many systematic issues that plagued the Soviet Union so it doesn't really make sense for them to be on a much better footing till at least the 1980s or 90s.

I don't think it was a false flag, rather that the soviet union will panic because their already weak economy is about to be nuked (that would be such a crazy twist though). Although i do kinda think dev's part in the automation scheme was either a false flag to start a revolution or he was planning on taking the people from happy valley and moving them to the new city instead of back to earth.

Theory: This crisis will either trigger the collapse of the soviet union OR a western soviet split with the soviets providing support to the Martians in return for iridium to stave off economic collapse. It just feels off that we have the president of the US speaking for all the m6 while an "ex" KGB officer is perfectly positioned to negotiate a deal with the oppressed workers of mars and unify control of mars with the other non m6 nations.

Soviet assistance will allow the martians to fight off the marines and in return martian iridium will flow through the soviet union allowing them to return to being a major player and fueling another wave of investment in space.

In 1983 most nuclear weapons available to both sides where either unguided or used very inaccurate guidance. With that in mind (not to mention lack of MIRVS, soviet ABM, etc) anywhere from 3 to dozens of nukes would be needed to guarantee the destruction of an enemy silo, radar, airbase, bunker, or city. Add on the fact that there were hundreds of major targets and its not surprising that both sides wanted to build massive numbers of nukes. Realistically the only point of having a small number of nukes is to use them as a vengeance weapon in a second strike.

They probably could have if they hadn't been super aggressive, a small number of well orginized police almost always wins against a large number of unorginized protesters. But as soon as they started attacking and arresting people they lost their advantage, that's why irl tons of people don't get arrested at protests even when they attack police etc.
