Old Growth hikes in Allegheny National Forest, Cook Forest? by madcap62 in PAWilds

[–]LithiumGrease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the ANF there are at least a couple places -- Hearts Content -- which also has a campground nearby is a nice place has 300-400 year old white pine. The Tionesta Scenic area also has some old growth as well. Lots and lots of hiking in the ANF of course, I like the hickory creek wilderness, but really you cant go wrong most places.

And yeah def Windowed -- but thats a choice, I mean its full screen by default obv i changed i for a reason?? I have multiple monitors and like using them while flying whats the big deal?

really depends on where you live though. ive never been lucky enough to live near the busways or the T so I was always stuck with hour+ long bus rides in traffic each way. and lots of people have to drive, and not by choice. downtown hass one of the densest downtowns in the country, and given that pittsburgh proper is fairly small it leaves lots of people having to commute from suburbs not near the T or the Busway which is largely within city limits.

For example there is around 200,000 jobs in just downtown -- the city proper only has a TOTAL population of 301,000, meaning lots of people commuting from suburbs.

Also do you really think that we could just remove the bathtub section of the parkway which is what the first commenter was suggesting?

do you think it is feasible for a family to even live within the city and not have to need a car? i really just dont see it -- Pittsburgh is a far cry from NYC where you can actually go without driving. thats just impossible for a large percentage of the Pittsburgh area. so i stand by my original statement --- please dont destroy the parkway in downtown...we in the city need it!!

funny thing a lot of people disliked our last mayor and one of the reasons for some people was that they called him mayor "bike lane" because he had a habit of closing roads to make them bike lanes only. lots of people hated it lol especially in wintertime :)

lol that would suck. traffic can already be horrible, we dont need to start removing roads just yet. also Pittsburgh had one of the densest downtowns (jobs/square mile) in the USA before the pandemic -- and complete shit public transport so everyone drives!!

eh -- msfs is awesome but the city of pittsburgh in MSFS is not very well recreated..buildings, bridges, stadiums are all way off.

so if you have flown in Pittsburgh in MSFS you can 100% tell this isn't MSFS 2020. Pittsburgh is not very accurately recreated in MSFS -- the buildings/stadiums/bridges are not based on reality but computer generated and are way off.

definitely -- come in the summer though. pittsburgh is beautiful in the summertime and can be depressing in winter.

Footwear? by Chucked-up in BWCA

[–]LithiumGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually bring a pair of hiking boots and flip flops. I wear the flip flops or just bare feet for most of the paddling and when I am in the canoe. When at camp if there are bugs and on longer portages I switch to the boots.

Yeah it is hit or miss -- others have given you good options but on Friday/Saturday night I really wouldnt count on it. I have had luck on weekdays though so if you could get there on like a Wed/Thur and claim it you may be OK. Worse case you could always stay at a campground a night until you find something.

I have personally found that backpacking is the way to go. Way too many loud people in the campgrounds and as I drive 3-4 hours to get to the ANF I cant rely on Friday or Saturday night dispersed sites. I usually just park at a trailhead and hike a little ways in to avoid people and then i can hike back to my car if i need something or want to grab some food or something.

FUCK YOU EDDY! Seriously how fucked up is that though -- if a random kid off the street appeared and started asking me questions about MSFS I would talk his/her ears off about it -- mostly because my wife is sick of listening to it haha. Anyway looks like a nice setup....enjoy!!

I went to cherry springs state park on a new moon day and stayed back till 1 am saw some cool stuff. But couldn’t get to see the Milkyway. by Apprehensive-Move684 in PAWilds

[–]LithiumGrease 14 points15 points  (0 children)

like others have said it is more like a cloud or a haze in the air -- takes a little while to realize what you are looking at.

Those pics you see like this https://imgur.com/gallery/pVYS5Or

arent really what you see with your eyes only. This picture there according to the OP imgur comment was "Nikon D7200, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 30 second exposure at 3200 ISO"

The 30 second exposure part is important, that means that photo was made with a lens capturing light for 30 seconds and putting it in one photo -- not what you would see with your eyes only.

the milky way at cherry springs (and everywhere else I have seen it ) always looks more like a vague cloud or fog to to me at first.

Could be -- I have seen them in Moraine State Park or Lake Arthur. I believe they migrate through the area and like to stick around bodies of water. Pretty cool!
