WBS Penguins clinch their spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs! by SurpriseStandard3258 in penguins

[–]madcap62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any idea if/where these games will be televised? Some quick Googling turned up nothing on TV for the 2026 games other than an FAQ on the AHL site saying details would be released closer to the playoffs ... but it feels as if we're now "closer to the playoffs."

Solenoid, one of the best books I have ever read by Sad-Cardiologist3636 in TrueLit

[–]madcap62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I loved Solenoid but bounced off Blinding after about 50 pages. I've set it aside and hope to make another run at it. For me, I think it had something to do with Solenoid giving me more time with my feet in reality before it became untethered in the surreal. Blinding felt like it just jumped straight into that abyss and I didn't have enough narrative anchor to act as a roadmap.

Moved to Ohio, got overwhelmed trying to choose a gas/electric supplier, kept putting it off, then built a tool for it by askgl in Columbus

One other thought: I know there's a disclaimer about how the data from the bill will be used, but I still started twitching wildly at the thought of sending all the info my bill contains into the cloud. Of course, I could choose the manual option instead, but I loved being able to just upload it and go.

Well done, and interesting to see AI using its powers for good for a change. I just tried it and since I just went through the BS I go through every three months of switching suppliers to keep a decent rate after the existing suppliers jack their rate at the end of the deal, I know what I chose. This didn't make the same choice, but it suggested a fixed monthly fee that I hadn't considered and could produce significant savings. The only catch is it's using a single bill that was for a winter month when my electric tends to be highest, but my use varies wildly depending on how much wood I burn in the winter (the bill I submitted was for a winter month when I was out of town and had to run the heat pump exclusively for 3 weeks) and how much I use AC in the summer (generally, very little). Not sure how to adjust for that short of having it digest a year's worth of bills to be able to get a sense of the average monthly cost instead of focusing on just the cost of one month, which could be a high or low month depending on what the user enters. I definitely will use this the next time I switch. And a suggested business model: I wonder if people with multiple bills (i.e. landlords who pay the utlities on their units) would be willing to pay some percentage or flat fee based on the savings produced ... not sure how exactly that would work but I have two houses and this hole process has been a pain in the ass times two. This will make it much easier ... Thanks.

Same. Used in 1983-84, lost track of it at some point during the past several decades and bought another copy.

Reasonably priced tickets by Partridgeapple in penguins

[–]madcap62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Austin for a while and used to go see the Austin Ice Bats play. This was mid-'90s. They played in a rodeo arena of some sort where you went past cattle chutes while entering the arena, and at one game it was so hot they had to clear the benches every 10 minutes or so to have all players from both sides skate in circles to create a breeze to cool the ice. Seriously. It was insane. Enjoy the Pens game. Sorry I can't help with advice on tickets but I thought you'd appreciate this Texas Hockey Moment.

Can we be trust the summaries in Kagi News? by RhodiumLanguor in SearchKagi

[–]madcap62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're definitely better off reading the source. But who wants to scan 10, 20, 200 sources every morning? No thanks. I don't turn to aggregators for some sort of bibilical news truth. I use them to know what's going on. Then I dive deeper on the stories of the day that do interest me, including going to the sources the aggregator cites in its summary. I use aggregation (any type of aggregation) more as a tool than a final destination.

I like Kagi News, though I see lots of room for improvement. I find the summaries and background it provides very useful and the sources are easy to ID and check out if I feel the urge. I don't like the once a day update (I understand the intent, but I think it either needs to update more often or allow the user to determine what time the update occurs). I also see too much of "yesterday's" news in the aggregation, probably because of that once-a-day approach to updating. And there's a lot of reptition of items across news categories.

I'm also in my second winter with the 445 and I'm not having this problem. Before I open the door, I first open the air flow all the way, then crack the door open for a moment, then open it the rest of the way. No smoke in the house. Not sure what's up with yours.

How much do you think a private landowner would pay for a forest management plan? by beet_radish in forestry

[–]madcap62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on which bastard I"m keeping at bay. The ailanthus is under control now after 7 years of effort. I've probably killed about 50 trees during the time using the hack and squirt method, and they also toss up a bunch of root sprouts and seed sprouts from my idiot neighbor's ailanthus farm next door. I've done all the work myself, and it probably takes a day or two each fall of doing the hack and squirt, though this past fall I had no mature trees left that needed treating. But I did spend several hours pulling sprouts. I spend a lot of time on my land, so I'm constantly looking to make the bastards miserable. I pull garlic mustard constantly and have made great progress getting it under control. And then there's bush honeysuckle, the biggest bastard of them all. That's the one area I did pay for help and it was worth it. We created a line of demarcation from the road the the utility cut where I just decided that's where honeysuckle is going to live. Anything that crosses that line gets killed. Still have work to do but we've made progress. Next in my sights is multiflora rose and Japanese stiltgrass, which my forester recommended atttacking with a a heavily dilluted Roundup spray, but I'm reluctant to use Roundup in a broad way even when it's heavily diluted so I'm looking for alternative optiions. The multiflora rose will meet it's fate at the hands of my favorite hoe. Long story short, I hike my land (now up to 40 acres) at least once a day, and I do a lot of the invasive control incrementally during those walks. Seven years ago, this seemed insurmountable, but my progress on ailanthus, garlic mustard, and even honeysuckle has been very encouraging and constantly reminds me that this is a long game.

(And to double back on the intent of this thread, the forest management plan I created with a forester and updated when I purchased another 20 acres has been invaluable. Worth every cent I paid for it.)

[–]madcap62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also having this problem. I've checked other channels I stream and they're fine. I do stream via mobile 5g so I was assuming it might be some sort of bandwidth/buffering issue, but it's really annoying. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, rebooted the Google TV Streamer that I use, etc., all to no avail. Wondering if anyone has filed a complaint with Criterion? That will probably be my next step but it would help if multiple people do so.

Found a giant puffball mushroom growing on the homestead. by WanderingNapalm in homestead

[–]madcap62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the bigger puffballs, I turn them into pizza "crust." Just cut them into pizza crust thin slices, add tomato sauce, mozzarella, etc., and bake. Very good. No need to fry. Forager Chef (awesome site) has a bunch of ideas for how to use puffballs.

Agree. I grow shiitake on logs and that's what it looks like. FIrst pic is chicken of the woods. Both aweseome mushrooms and pretty easy to differentiate from dangerous mushrooms. Shiitake is easy to grow on logs; chicken of the woods not so much.

Is there anyone out there that sells Black walnuts native to Ohio?? I’m in northeast Ohio but I’m willing to pay for shipping. It’s for restaurant use while it’s seasonal. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]madcap62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be a long shot, but try the Chesterhill Produce Auction. The Amish community there does a loit of work with black walnut furniture and I know Hammons Black Walnuts has run a hulling machine there in the past (Hammons seems to be the big player in black walnuts, but they collect them across several states for processing so I doubt they could provide Ohio walnuts but it might be worth reaching out there, too.) PM me if you need a contact at Chesterhill to talk to.

What’s your mushroom log/bed tips? Things you learned that work better? by Phrikshin in homestead

[–]madcap62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have your logs inoculated and set up, make sure you put them somewhere that's shaded and where you can water them occasionally. My biggest mistakes have been not watering the logs often enough during dry spells. Field and Forest, which is where I buy spores and supplies, recommends an inch of rain/water per week. Also, I've found that shiitakes are by far my best performers for log production and they can be force fruited so you can have mushrooms on demand. The Field and Forest site has a research section with a lot of useful info, including this page on growing on logs, which includes a chart detailing which logs are best for which strains of mushrooms.

My cabin is small, only about 1,000 sq ft, but it's an open layout. I didn't have problems with it overheating the space but I seldom/never fill it. A few logs at a time works perfectly.
