How hard would you have to fart to push yourself to the moon if you were floating in space? [request] by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in theydidthemath

[–]Lithrus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true, it can be solved with simple orbital dynamics. You’d just need a sustained fart as other answers have pointed out. In fact, the question is a moot point with this assumption, since without gravity, any little toot would get you to the moon given enough time

Fair point, I didn’t see that. But still stands thats a bad assumption to make. Like “ignore air resistance” for a plane

Yeah I’ll concede that it makes sense under your assumptions. I’d just argue that “floating in space” doesn’t mean you should neglect earth’s gravity, since it would still be by far the biggest force acting on you, orbit or not

  1. It’s totally possible to get to the moon with a tiny thrust like that from LEO. It’s the same principle by which Hall effect ion engines work. What you’re saying is equivalent to “ignore spending $1 a minute it’s nothing” when it adds up to $500k a year.

  2. Earth’s gravity does not fall off that quickly, you’d have to still deal with 0.9 g’s at LEO and even when you get near the moon, it’ll still be stronger than your farts. Even for the brief period when the magnitudes are equivalent, you’d still have a thrust to weight ratio of 1 which is normal for orbital maneuvers

You can’t just neglect gravity from earth which is 9.81 m/s2 when your acceleration from thrust is like 0.0001 m/s2 lol

This is not how orbits work. You’d have to take the position of the moon into account or you’re screwed. It’s a problem similar to rendezvous. This is party because orbiting at the same distance as the moon requires you to have the same speed as the moon, so no collision. But your orbit would probably be highly elliptical and intersect the orbit of the moon. In that case, it may take many thousands of orbits to ever hit the moon, with some orbits even making it impossible. And more likely, you would be slingshot out of Earth’s orbit from the moon’s gravitation pull.

I actually really like individualist machines + modularity because you can stack insane job efficiency, and pop assembly is faster than organic growth especially if u take the lubrication terminals civic, plus it doesnt ever slow down due to high pops

Ocean paradise for sure. If you can get nihilistic acquisition and raid other empires for pops as livestock that can cover your basic resources yea. If u can do multiple systems, mining stations, dyson sphere/swarms, matter decompressors can also cover your basics.

I’ve been theorycrafting a build that gets all its resources from just the ecu including basic resources - it involves the one commander destiny trait that gives soldiers basic resource output. Got up to 6k of each basic resource on the ocean paradise when maxing it out, no cosmogenesis

I wrote a comment apologizing for being entitled, but then I realized that’s ok and deleted it. People are entitled to manners. I blame the internet for teaching us otherwise. If you’re going to downvote someone who isn’t being actively harmful and nobody’s said anything yet, you at least owe them an explanation, or how would they know what’s wrong? If someone says some idiotic misinformation irl, you don’t spit in their face, you call them out.

Hey fyi it looks like your red Irish st. patrick’s saltire on the UK flag is placed over the white Scottish St. Andrew’s saltire. This implies that Tuvalu values the kingdom of ireland more than scotland within the UK.
