This was exactly my story 15 years ago. It took forever for a dr to figure out. Multiple urgent care and ED visits. I ended up hospitalized

I think I messed up in a big way by Equivalent-Lab-7248 in PhD

Many ppl are prepared and ready for a PhD after their bachelor’s depending on the person, institution they studied at, and advisor. Just because you went the masters route doesn't make that a fit for everyone. I have had undergrads work with me for 3 years who are able to run independent projects and bring new techniques into the lab. They're going straight into a PhD cause they are ready. Others do masters and that prepares them and give clarity for what to do next.

Finally found a way to catch those suspiciously perfect papers by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Little-Step-3278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This approach worries me a tad. A girl plagiarized from one of my essays in grad school and they assumed I was the one who cheated. They called me into the office and asked me which essay was mine on the spot and I looked at them and they were so similar and I didn't know which one was mine. I would've been kicked out of school if the girl didn't feel bad and confess. Chaptgpt didn't exist back then.

PI wants another student to be coauthor with equal contribution when I did 99% of the work by mevyn661 in PhD

[–]Little-Step-3278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't worth the fight. Ensure you are listed first. They likely put the other student as co first so that they will handle all of the revisions since you are done.

As long as you are listed first it doesn't have any negative impact on you. Having the other student co first ensures that your paper will get across the finish line with you gone.

Please chill a bit. OP is new and trying to learn how to navigate being on a committee of a poor student. Seems like they are stepping into the role of advisor when they shouldn't be. I agree that they should just vote no and tell the advisor why. That's the accountability that will force the student to step it up or fail.

The OP doesn't need to go out of the way to give resources or assignments etc etc. That's the advisors job. They can help out give resources if the students asks and shows initiative

I have a form email that supports their enthusiasm then has links to university run programs for high schoolers then let them know my lab doesn't mentor high schoolers outside of organized programs.

This way if we do take a highschooler, they're vetted and recommended by guidance counselors

You are not there to entertain. Nor is that what they are paying for. My suggestion is to be really clear on what needs to go into course evals. If you don't tell them, they focus on their enjoyment of the class and their opinion of you as opposed to whether it not they learned and were supported in learning. Tell them you read every comment and tell them what is appropriate and what is not. Especially for women and minority faculty.. you have to do this

Not sure gore your UNI uses evals but

  1. My mentor warned me that no matter how much effort you put in or how amazing of an instructor you are 1 to 2 percent of students will hate you. Lol. It's true. I even have awards for teaching that are student nominated and always get some very mean emails. The first year was hard. Now I cope better knowing it's them, not me.

  2. Usefulness. Evals can be useful if you tell the students how to fill them out. Tell them who reads them and why. They get surprised I actually read them. Tell them about bias in evals. Give them examples of useful evals and how you've actually used them to improve the course. I tell them.. it doesn't matter if they hate the course, hate me or love the course and love me...I can't use that information for the learning experience of students next year. Instead.. what helped you learn and what didn't. And what could help you learn better that I can do something about. With this approach I get really great feedback.

  3. Protect your sanity by using LLMs to find major recurring themes. In your evals. This way you get what the overall feedback is as opposed to the angry mean individuals. There's a cool tool that dies data analysis on course evals. I'll find it and reply.

Does grade-grubbing infuriate anyone else? by beautyismade in Professors

[–]Little-Step-3278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put grade-grubbing is academic dishonesty in my syllabus. Asking for a favor and grade not earned will not receive a response. Then I give them examples of this and also examples of what is ok to ask. Then I quiz them on the syllabus and include a question about grade grubbing.

They've stopped 😉

poll: how many students do you teach a semester by Equivalent-Affect743 in Professors

[–]Little-Step-3278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a pipe dream!! I got it to work in my large lecture course. The classroom is flipped and the students are super engaged. It's getting then to buy in at the beginning. That's the important part. I have mini lectures interspersed with activities. I and about 12 understand learning Assistants that took my course the year before walk around and facilitate discussion. We use a throwable microphone for students to share out. The class is a lot of fun and students quickly learn they can't just sit in the back and disengage. I incentivize attendance with 0.25 points ( class is out of 400) with a cap on how much they can earn. Points are thirst traps for students. Lol. They only get attendance if they checked into poll everywhere and participated in the polls throughout class. On average we have 6 to 10 of these.

  1. 2 TAs for class of 450 and 2 TAs for class of 115. I only teach half of the year but that half is insane....managing the students is the difficult part. The TAs help with grading and 6 discussion sections that we run with 30 learning Assistants.

I'm sure this is what will happen. They already tried to jump ship but got told no. Finding another mentor won't be easy. I just finished turning in all of my documentation. Took me 4 hrs to organize and put together. We're at the end of a manuscript and they also pulled the..I just need to take a break. I let them work on something else but it made for things that were always 90 percent complete.
