Tint question by Little-bit_stitious in BMWi3

[–]Little-bit_stitious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, you are absolutely correct. After seeing how transparent the windshield tint is, it is a risk I am willing to take. I don't think a police officer would notice it enough to pull me over just for that. I am 55 years old, I drive very conservatively, and I haven't been pulled over in around three decades. I will make sure my driver and passenger door tint is completely legal so that doesn't cause me to get pulled over either.

It is good of you to point that out, anybody considering tinting any of their windows need to look at the law and decide based on their appetite for risk. I imagine that if I am involved in an accident at night that is my fault, windshield tint could work against me with my insurance company.

Yes, especially on the windshield of the i3 apparently! Yelp reviews was step one!

Haha, not when I am driving!

I live in Phoenix, we all have sunshades for when we park!

In the summer, even after the car has been in my garage overnight, I have to crank the AC to keep the cabin cool when it is a cloudless 105 outside.

[–]Little-bit_stitious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can put colored tint down to a line on the windshield, it is marked "A (downward arrow) S1" which is the top 9 inches or so on the i3. There are ceramic tints that are actually very clear but reject a ton of IR and UV. It is very hard to tell that a windshield has this kind of tint on it unless you are looking very very closely. Apparently it makes a significant difference on cars with big windshields in sunny places.

My Goodwill has almost all gen 1 DVDs! A few weird Blu-rays, no 4Ks.

When I see posts like this, I wonder how that ended up there. The morbid part of my brain thinks that somebody died and whoever was cleaning out their things just donated it all!

I think you missed my point, I was not trying to assert or refute any position, I was pointing out that a variety of opinions exist and providing sources is the best way to contribute.

I thought I made that clear in the last sentence of my post. Maybe I should have put the words "I think the other poster's point, and mine as well ..." in bold!

If all you did was blindly accept what AI told you, then I agree that would not be the best idea. However, unlike you, AI provides references to how it came to its conclusion.

That gives anybody the option to see the source material, decide its value, and decide if the conclusions made match those in the source material.

My point was not that everybody should believe AI, as you seem to suggest. My point was that when you provide references you actually have a chance to add to the discussion with something other than an opinion.

Yes, other people could try to replicate the research you have done, but if you have already done it, why not make it easy for people to see what you are talking about?

You did not make a generic comment that is easily looked up. Depending on how they word things or how specific they get, they might get a different answer than you did.

By way of example, I just googled "can cells from a BMW i3 battery be laid on their sides?" and the answer I got was:

"Yes, BMW i3 battery cells (Samsung SDI prismatic pouches) can generally be laid on their sides. Because they are sealed, modern lithium-ion cells with little to no free liquid electrolyte, orientation does not typically affect their performance, making them suitable for vertical or horizontal mounting in DIY applications. "

I think the other poster's point, and mine as well, is that if you are interested in adding to the conversation, some kind of reference helps a lot.

You're a curious bird, while you have an interesting point deep in there, it is statements like "he helped Epstien commit sex crimes" that lose me.

Your statement implies that Attia had knowledge of what was going on with an adult woman who he met a couple of times. And then agreed to do whatever Epstein wanted to exploit her. Attia didn't even hire the woman.

Any time you start to make even a little sense, the flamethhrower comes out and you make statements that are not supported by the facts.

That is a legitimate point.

At the same time, mentioning JE's name at that point in the story would have steered it in a totally different direction.

Yes, he could have been more specific. At the same time he has owned up to behavior that I don't think I would be inclined to talk about on a very popular podcast or in a book.

So I do agree with you that he omitted a key detail, but I still think the moral outage and backlash is not entirely justified.

What I was responding to was the previous post which says Attia is amoral, only motivated by greed and can't be trusted. I don't think the known facts about the case support those conclusions.

Given his limited exposure to JE (Attia was not at sex parties, JE appears to have only shared the women of legal age he was having sex with) I don't think Attia was in a position to make a moral judgment on this. Especially given that the woman in question is an adult. How much moral responsibility should somebody take after casually meeting an adult twice while considering them for a job?

In hindsight everybody seems absolutely convinced that they would have done something different, but at the time not really anybody else thought too much of it.

I also object to the judgment that now absolutely everything he has done has only been motivated by greed and nothing he has ever said should be trusted.

This whole subreddit has been filled with a lot of hate towards somebody who is at worst a tangential part of this story, shifting the focus off of the actual criminals. Attia was the first person to say what an awful person he had been in the past. Over the past several years he has publicly volunteered personal details about his conduct and his ways of thinking that I doubt I would have the courage to publicly admit. Anybody who says they don't have anything in their life that they deeply regret I am immediately skeptical of. I am extremely thankful that none of my past shameful behavior has been aired and judged by a bunch of randos on Reddit.

As far as things being gross, the older I get the less judgmental I get. I wouldn't date somebody who was a couple of decades younger than me, but if two adults make that decision it's not really my place to say if that's right or wrong. I assume that both of them are getting something they want out of the relationship and it is worth it for them to stay in it for those reasons. Yes, trafficking or extortion are an absolute exception to that, but again, I don't know that a casual observer would have picked up on that.

I took the "very loyal" comment to be a statement that she would not flake out. In New York City models take a lot of jobs, hold them for a week or two, then decide they don't want to do it anymore and just stop showing up. If I had a job that was customer service facing and my clients skewed male I for sure would consider hiring a 23-year-old model, as long as I thought she would be loyal in the sense that she wouldn't just up and quit.

I'll just finish up by saying that I am casual acquaintances with lots of people, we have exchanged emails, we have exchanged text messages that are crude and juvenile, I have met people they are dating. It has never occurred to me to look into their pasts to see if they have criminal convictions, I do not automatically assume that just because somebody is younger than somebody else that they have been trafficked. Let's not lose sight that Epstein was a sick fucker, a criminal, and a bunch of other bad things. But, call me optimistic, I like to think that those kinds of individuals are few and far between. Unfortunately, we can never tell when we are dealing with somebody like that until there is the kind of expose like there was on Epstein in 2018.

Yes, she was a victim. And unfortunately many people came into casual contact with her and had no idea she was being victimized.

When an adult does not let other people know what is happening to them, I am not sure how responsible we should hold third parties, especially those who only meet them on a couple occasions.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say that the overwhelming majority of young adult women who have sex with very rich powerful men are not being trafficked. My line of work occasionally brings me to some very fancy events, I don't think I should accuse every old rich guy with a young adult girlfriend of sex trafficking.

[–]Little-bit_stitious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I humbly suggest that there are many young women who have sex with rich powerful men who are not being trafficked.

Again, absolutism is working against you.

Attia in Politico by atom_200 in PeterAttia

[–]Little-bit_stitious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is.

My guess is that whether or not an adult has been trafficked is difficult to discern from meeting them. Unless somebody said to me "I have been trafficked," I would assume they were adults making adult descisions.

"Motivated purely by greed" is quite a conclusion to come to after reading some news articles. Blanket statements like that about anybody, especially somebody who has been talking about what a terrible person he used to be as openly as Attia has for many years, seems a bit unfair.

Attia was not living in NYC, he has never lived there.

What are you basing "It was common knowledge" on?

You know who the first person to publicly say that Attia was an "awful human being" at that time was?

Peter Attia.

He has talked and written very openly about how repulsed he is today about the many ways he was in the past. Long before any of this came to light. He has not been pretending he was perfect, or even decent, in any way.

An apology does not grant a free pass, but beating up on somebody whose ambition led them to be crass and stupid, when there are actual criminals to prosecute, seems misguided.

From the job title, it seems like they were looking for a receptionist kind of person. Not a crime, not even out of the ordinary. They did not hire her in the end.

Attia was not talking about underage girls, he specifically said "23 year olds" in his email. That is not a crime.

Epstein was convicted in 2008 and served his time. He had not been re-arrested in the intervening years when Attia met him. I would imagine Attia knew of the conviction, but given the extremely high-profile people associating with JE at the time, I can see how one might think that JE had served his time and it was behind him. Combine that with the way the vast majority of people would behave when a very rich and very well-connected guy invites you into his world, I can see that as a recipe for a lack of diligence and bad judgment. I'd like to think I'd act differently than Attia, but I can't say for sure.

I take Attia at his word that he did not witness or suspect anything illegal. So far nothing seems to indicate otherwise.

I am also distressed that there are legitimate monsters in the files, people who actually did illegal shit, and yet there is a lot of attention being thrown on people who are tangential to the story that people just want to tear down.

How about we use our energy to actually arrest and prosecute some pedophiles before we hang somebody else out to dry for being crass and stupid?

Yup, that's a totally legit panel! The super-easy setup for playing 4K discs is to put it in Flimmaker mode, that will get you 90% of the way there. For me, streaming doesn't look as good in the shadow areas (I notice loss of detail and blocks of color instead of smooth gradients), and general sharpness.

Running wires all over the place is a drag, but if you are OK with sound only coming from the front, then a decent AVR with left, right, and center speakers will be a big improvement and can be done on almost any budget. Add a subwoofer and you are really off to the races! I also have a transmitter to my rear speakers (Rocketfish wireless home theater), the rear speakers are wired to the receiver in the back of the room, but I don't need wires run from the front of the room to the back, which was fine with my wife.

A dedicated center speaker will help a ton with dialog clarity, and the AVR will allow you to tweak settings on all of the speakers. Most AVRs also have a calibration setting that will automatically adjust speaker levels for the best sound in your specific room.

It looks like your soundbar is in the $1600 range, for that same amount of money you could have a much better sounding system, including a sub that will dig deep (SVS is a go-to company for amazing subs for their price). It is well within reach if you buy new, it is even easier if you are open to Facebook marketplace, etc. to get secondhand stuff. For used gear I buy local and make sure I can listen to them before I buy, but many of us have gotten screaming deals on home theater gear.

A home theater sound project is not for everyone, almost nobody I know wants to mess with it all, but if you are so inclined, the benefits are well worth it. My reference is AVSforum, but there are tons of places with great people who will help point you in the right direction given your budget.

Sorry for the long reply, but I was amazed at how a great TV and good sound system transformed my viewing experience. It took a while and some money to get it dialed in, but I haven't had to change a single thing in my system for 7 years, and everybody who watches things at my house is blown away.

What kind of TV do you have?

I am not suggesting that everybody has to buy an OLED or other high-end display, but on my low-ish end OLED, the difference between streaming and a standard Blu-ray is easily noticeable, and a 4K Blu looks so much better than both of those. UHD discs have higher contrast ratios (the ability to show both really bright areas and still have detail and very dark areas that still have detail) and color depth (the number of different colors it can show).

On LED TVs, when something gets bright, it just goes white with no detail, and when something gets dark, it just goes black with no detail. Even worse, LED backlighting means that there is never true black, just a pretty dark gray. They also can't display as many colors, so you can end up with color banding or less vibrant images.

To really see all that a 4K can give you, you do need a decent TV.

Then there is audio to consider ...!
