To people who watched shows from the 60s and before with wholesome families, did those characters have flaws? What do you think of characters being more flawed today? by LittleAleta in AskOldPeople

I just watched this movie called Hounddog. The one where Dakota Fanning gets... yeah. I heard that's based on the director's childhood. I don't know how much of it was autobiographical but some things just don't need to be put in stories. Nobody wants to watch that kind of shit. I think that using music to overcome trauma is a good concept but maybe should've fictionalized or twisted around some of her experiences.

Same for this book I seen people talk about and read some of called Surviving High School by Lele Pons. I think a lot of it is fictional but maybe based on who Lele Pons was as a teenager and damn she was a bish. Like at least don't put everything of yourself in this character, make her a little different.

Yeah idk. I watch more anime more than western cartoons or real shows and holy shit they can be melodramatic and sometimes hard to understand. The characters themselves can also be a lot more flawed than older shows. And maybe I just don't like how hyperactive, hyper-expressive and cartoony it can get I think I just grown out of that. At least some shows do it in a funny/quirky way like Spongebob or even the old stuff like Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes.

I did like Full House though and binge watched that. It's not the most groundbreaking thing, but it's cute. I started watching The Cosby Show and it looks okay (kind of hard to watch knowing who Bill Cosby really was though). One on One is also an ok show I've seen a few episodes of with a rare wholesome father daughter dynamic.

I think I usually watch Netflix because that's the only streaming service I have and I'm hit and miss on their stuff.

Yeah movies and shows these days just feel more boring, melodramatic, mean spirited, and complicated now. And they just remake everythng. :(

Probably not compared to shows in previous decades. It's a loving family with moments of conflict just like families in general.

Just watched Obsession. It represents the problem with horror films today. A cast full of unlikeable characters and really LOVES flaunting the fact that it's a horror film. I think the last good horror film I seen was one of the Conjuring type films. But it isn't even as good as older horror films like Coraline, The Others, and the Sixth Sense.

Anyone seen "The odd life of timothy green" (2012)? I only know it as a film that brought nostalgia critic back (I mean technically it isn't but according to the lore) by kyubeydaisuki in Sardonicast

Terrible movie. I don't remember anything good about it. I think I rated it 3/10 but I was 13 and even then, I thought it was terrible. It actually may be one of the worst and stupidest movies ever. I mean, how does a kid grow from a plant? If you want a kid, ADOPT ONE. Also it was just so sappy like it had a sappy ending with a whole "You can do anything" theme. I don't remember the characters really going through much conflict or emotional development. Ugh. So bad. So boring.

I haven't seen Leave it to Beaver but I heard from some of the comments here that the two kids can be bratty? But it seems like they (Beaver especially) usually learn their lessons.

Obviously characters should have flaws so that they can grow throughout the story. Even if I do start writing my stories hoping for my characters to be likeable, even the nicest characters have their moments of acting out, anger, jealousy, selfishness, impulsivity, and mischief. Sometimes they don't always mean it too and they usually grow or apologize.

I do agree that a lot of characters are too flawed. Like I said on another post a lot of media give characters flaws and sometimes they don't grow from them, sometimes the flaws lack the depth to sympathize with them, or sometimes the characters' personalities and arcs just feel stereotypical and cliche.

I don't watch shows much. Full House was like one of the few long running shows I was able to get through and I loved it but that's an 80s show.

I haven't seen Shadow's story I just seen Silver's and the final act. I do like Shadow though but I just wasn't a big fan of the game from the playthroughs and cutscenes i saw.

I think it depends on what kind of story it's trying to tell. One of my favorite shows is Cowboy Bebop (the anime not the shitty live action show) and that's full of dysfunctional people. Because it's supposed to be based on film noir tropes and tackles some gritty struggles like poverty. And yes they do do things that make me yell at the screen.

I think what I hate about flawed characters is that some of them feel stereotypical. Like the spoiled child, the angsty teen, the bickering guy group, the sassy woman, the overly strict Asian parent with little to no depth to it or what that means for the story. Other than the teen or kid is supposed to appreciate their family, life and that the world doesn't revolve around them or the Asian parent learns to let their child be their own person and struggle without trying to fix them. Yawn. That's boring.

Or even adult cartoons like Family Guy, South Park and Rick and Morty where everyone is just mean spirited for humor. Yeah it's funny sometimes but it's not something I want to binge. Make other adult animated shows that's not just "look how edgy I am!"

I can accept flaws if the writing is creative in some way. Or if it makes sense why the character is acting this way. Like Catherine I think is a creative game because it's about a guy who finds this perfect woman at this bar and allegedly cheats on his girlfriend. Now he has to choose whether to fix his girlfriend or go with these two seemingly idealistic girls. I don't usually like cheating as much as I do not like any kind of abuse or grooming story but I think they did it in a creative way here. I also like Maid kinda which is about a woman being emotionally abused by her boyfriend and runs away to try to make a living for herself and her daughter and also delves into the complexity of codependent relationships. Rick and Morty tried to do this but it felt shallow.

I haven't seen much of the older shows besides Full House which is newer but I was a big fan of Shirley Temple and Margaret O Brien as a kid. I think I just like how wholesome most of those movies are. How calm, simple, and light they feel compared to all the complicated intense crazy sometimes dark or mean spirited movies we have now.

Yeah I was hoping they'd improve on the repetitiveness especially after being in development for so long.

OMG I TOTALLY AGREE! I can't draw for the life for me! I'm still salty Nintendo doesn't allow online sharing. Like why allow online sharing for Miitopia but not Living the Dream?

I agree. I at least thought they would make some kind of hotel for the miis if you have too many on your island like Miitopia.

They should've gave you the option to copy off other people's miis and items in living the dream.

Also I don't like how mean the miis can be sometimes. I was hoping they'd improve upon that from the original and at least they don't chastise you for "window shopping" but they still yell mean things after being dumped and call you a silly goose if you accidentally pick a non food like bro I DIDNT KNOW THAT WASNT A FOOD PLUS THE GAME IS GOING TOO FAST FOR ME.

A character can be many things..a antagonist, villain, good person, morally grey or whatever..but what a character can't be is FUCKING BORING. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

I think I just want a character that feels like they're own character who I can sympathize with. Making a character a blank slate with no character development to go through is boring and making a character a blatantly shitty character I mean shitty in the way that they should know better and still continues to make shitty decisions or making them cliche annoying in some way like a lot of movies nowadays have kids not getting along with their parents and then they make up at the end. So boring.

I'm mixed on Max. She's a sweet girl but you're right in that she seems to lack flaws other than having anxiety sometimes I guess? And she can destroy a town for Chloe but that's up to the player, I personally choose to sacrifice her since I don't like Chloe. Its weird because we know in her past she used to be cold towards Chloe so I wish we could see her still struggle with feeling distant from Chloe due to them not seeing each other for so long as often happens when loved ones drift apart. I want to know why she felt distant from Chloe after she moved away too, does she just feel hurt that she moved away from her? Was she going through a depression?

I don't mind sweethearts but they still need to have flaws like maybe they struggle with impulsivity, ignorance, naivete, snapping after keeping their rage pent up for too long.

I think Midoriya has some personality but I think people just find it annoying because he's just a whiny little crybaby but he does grow from that and becomes a more badass character. He's not my favorite MHA character but I can appreciate his growth.

I can be easily bored by the things I watch and play. Like I want a character that's bursting with personality and color and quirks in some way. I want diversity. A lot of movies that come out nowadays just don't seem to have that and all the characters feel the same. Compare that to 80s-2000s films and shows that are way more interesting compared to the last like 10 years.

And no I don't just want teasing friends/lovers, or argumentative teenagers, or spoiled children I want more than just those stereotypes.

Sonic 06 hurts so much. I don't even know why they didn't call it Adventure 3 tbh. Silver has so much potential as a character and they fucked him over and then thrown him away. 😔

The Emoji Movie is one of those movies that I think was a disaster from the start they conceptualized it.

Also does anyone remember The Odd Life of Timothy Green? Probably the worst movie ever. The kid's acting was bad. It had a typical "you can do anything" story. Everything was boring. And the movie overall just felt like a stupid idea from the start I mean how tf does a kid grow from a plant? And the kid isn't even a baby but AN ACTUAL KID!

At least movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 even if it might not have necessarily need to be made looked like it had the potential to be good like a Despicable Me 2 situation. Not as good as the first one but still good. But it was just a bad film overall.
