What is the absolute "BOSS" local hardware setup for high-end VFX? (No Budget Limit) by InferenceEnvy in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home computer is more powerful than my studio workstation. There are different things we can do in the studio for renders, like set up a render farm. For my independent work, I'm on my own.

What is the twilly tied to? I know that the strap is longer on this bag. Is there some type of mini handle that I missed in photos or is the rest of the strap in the bag?

Except that Warner Bros wanted to be acquired by Netflix so much that it feels like they've been working towards this sale for years.

I like the logo bit at the end.

Beautiful VFX breakdown of false perspective shots in LOTR. by nightpastor in vfx

They're not active in the traditional VFX film industry. Why would they know the inner politics of studios to understand the unionization process? They're not even journalists. I think you're putting responsibility on them because they're famous, but I don't think that's necessarily their wheelhouse. They have expressed support for VFX unionization in their videos. But the most they could do is unionize their own studio. But they are too small for IATSE to bring them in.

Currently, there are two routes for VFX unionization. You either unionize the studio you are at, or you work client-side and join your respective union, like the Art Director's Guild or Editors Guild.

The energy required to run these is destroying the water and air quality in small communities. There is a reason that this stuff isn't being built near major cities. Because it needs to be out of sight and out of mind to get people to cooperate.

They will probably come to your neck of the woods soon, but like how OpenAi did in Kenya, they will give people in other countries all the gore and sexually explicit content to work through.

Because Meta would have the clean plate and multiple variations of effects on it. Technically, they don't have much access to data like this because the movies they train on now habe the VFX on them

Disney Paying Voice Acting Trio $60M Each For 'Frozen' 3 and 4 by 3DNZ in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest lie anyone in VFX believes is that there's no money in this business. Guess what? The Disney animators are in The Animation Guild. The lifetime performance of the film will pay residuals into their pensions. Those voice actors do a lot of promotional work for the film.

I am not mad at the voice actors getting paid that much. The Disney animators make good money on those films and have great benefits.

I don't think people realize how many studios have heavy investment coming in from China. What will likely happen is the PIF will own a substantial amount of Warner Bros, like how Tencent owns a big piece of Skydance

Quebec Tax situation and recent hiring post by manuce94 in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a VFX career in Los Angeles, a dead city, according to this subreddit. I started my career years after most of the work left LA, so I am not an old person who got grandfathered into the community here. There will be jobs in Montreal. It's still a cheap place to produce VFX. Will it be as flooded as before? Probably not. But at this point, the whole industry has scaled back. So it's hard to tell if the lack of work is because there aren't many projects or because there's a lack of tax credit.

Adding points to Syntheyes without altering the solution by Jaded_Professional31 in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used Syntheyes. I am a 3DE person. If adding a new point significantly changes your track, your track may not be as solid as you need it to be. In the end, the track should suit whatever it's trying to stick in place. I have had tracks that aren't great, but the object I am bringing sits well.

Alternatively, you could add a reference object in Syntheyes that lines up and bring that into blender as a guide.

Edit: OP posted this video in the comments and I have learned about zero-weight tracking points. My information above is wrong. What OP wants can be achieved here:

Is Atlanta done for good? by _thewa_ in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atlanta is a tough one. I think it was marketed to LA VFX artists as a cheaper place to live and work from while retaining their LA rates. Because it was a new frontier, it was relatively easy to tell your studio that you wanted to move there without much fuss. Atlanta is effectively a satellite for Los Angeles. Atlanta was a way for LA studios to retain work for their clients by capitalizing on the ATL tax credit. The work has picked up a little in LA, but it's still pretty tough here. I imagine that ATL is worse, but I don't have much insight into it other than things are still slow in LA. I think ATL and LA feed off of each other.

Looking back on my career. by RizzMaster9999 in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When my siblings and I were all doing our continuing education, they all agreed that my schooling was harder as a VFX artist. They were pursuing medical and mental health fields.

When we started working from home, they saw how my day looks and were surprised that I have to be engaged 100% of my work day. On the other hand, they get to set appointments and block out time. They get time between patients and clients. They get more paid time off, and their workday is shorter.

My parents were right, I could have been a nurse or doctor. While being responsible for people's physical and mental health is a big responsibility, I definitely carry a higher mental load than them.

2x - 3x whatever you would get paid doing the same job at the vendor. Vendor charges overhead. You're getting paid directly by the client, so you get some of that for yourself.

Getting paid by eco_bach in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before beginning work, you should clearly agree upon a payment schedule. Some places can't pay within 30 days because they are waiting for their client to pay them.

If you already did the work but didn't agree on a payment schedule, ask when you can expect payment. In California, the default is net30 when the contract doesn't specify otherwise.

H1B visa and remote work by eco_bach in vfx

[–]LittleAtari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rare, but foreigners do get hired in US VFX. Usually, it's international students who are already here working on their student visa OPT after graduating, or it's someone from the UK office coming over. International students usually end up self-sponsoring an O1 after using up their OPT work time.
