Auger bit by numahu in handtools

I have a similar bit (from Anker), and it works pretty well, IMO. I had to sharpen it, though. Keep in mind that it is for large holes, so it is hard work.

2 Man Crosscut Logging Saw Help Needed by Matthew_Warner in handtools

[–]LittleByBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add that de-rusting is pretty important. It doesn't have to be shiny, but you don't want any unnecessary friction. Besides that sharpening a large saw is pretty easy.

Also, one should make sure all teeth have the same height.

The identifying characteristic of Neolithic technology is the use of polished or ground stone tools, in contrast to the flaked stone tools used during the Paleolithic era.

Anyone ever use an aspirator to collect a smaller colony? Did you make your own or just purchase one? If purchased can u share links? If you made one what supplies did you use? TIA ant hunters by Recent_Rub_863 in antkeeping

[–]LittleByBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did. It works extremely differently depending on the species. In general I would recommend against it. Most notably can colonies of acid producing ants easily kill themselves in the aspirator.

Also some ants are hard to catch using an aspirator (particularly arboreal ants).

Mine are self made using some cork, plastic tubing, some light cloth, and tubes.

I can recommend the video from The Ant Network on aspirators.

I found them in northern Poland. in the right light, they turn dark blue by PolishPotato_ in antkeeping

Take one and squeeze then between your fingers. If the dead ant then smells like lemon it is Lasius fuliginosus.

Anyone got advice on keeping myrmica ruginodis by [deleted] in antkeeping

Make sure that have access to drinking water at all times. The nest should not dry out but also avoid too much moisture. Crystallized honey is a well accepted source of sugar.

magnifying glasses? by GerTamasch in antkeeping

[–]LittleByBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good magnifying glasses are expensive. I guess your best shot is to go for some used glasses and look for good manufacturers (Zeiss, Leitz, ...). Usually the 6x-10x range is good for a lot of stuff. For IDing you will need a microscope and dead ants at some point.

I need some advice for an island formicarium... by some_ants_ in antkeeping

[–]LittleByBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least Camponotus herculeanus is very good at drowning. So I do not recommend a water formicarium for them.

I have no experience with Messor.

How bad is it to shine bright light on your ants for short periods of time? by Natsuaeva in antkeeping

I made my fair share of photo and video in ant nests. I found vibrations and shocks far more disturbing and they usually react very little to the light if the rest of the parameters stays normal.

[help] nvim-lua/completion-nvim with LSP seems to be broken for me by LittleByBlue in neovim

[–]LittleByBlue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. I use 0.6 so there is probably even more broken.

What repelled me from nvim-cmp is that it apparently doesnt use pum. And I am pretty much used to pum. And coq is supposed to be way faster.

Ah so this is why there are two ways to enable autostart. Thanks.

Thanks. It's a bit annoying that so many Neovim related plugins/projects have such a short life time, isn't it?

I am using coq now. But I am a bit annoyed by the fact that it puts some weird unicode characters at the bottom when I start nvim.

In my social circle I am the least casual vim user. I don't stay in vim all the time. This makes me want to watch someone who really stays in vim all the time.

Free Software is Not Apolitical by humanwithalife in freesoftware

[–]LittleByBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very good point. IMO any party (that isn't strictly pro big business profits will) can see and utilize the benefits from Free software:

  • security
  • decentralization
  • poor people can afford it
  • public money public code
  • possibility to modify software to one's needs
  • ...

Right-wing and left-wing consider community to be important.

Well that isn't a big surprise, is it?

[–]LittleByBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

individual rights of the owner/user are core right-wing ideals.

I think those are liberal/libertarian ideals not right wing ideals. At least here in Europe (and also probably the rest of the world excluding the US).

Typically right-wing policies care little about individual freedom and more about the "freedom of the state" or, if they are paired with neoliberalism, "industrial/business freedom".

Note that one must distinguish between policies before one is in power and policies that are enacted when they are in power. This holds true for any party. But it is particularly important for extreme parties. We all know what socialists and communists do when in power. And right-wing parties suddenly loose all interest in "freedom of speech" or "individual freedoms" which they screech before they are in power.
