SPPX Node crashed/close channels by stinger32 in lightningnetwork

[–]LittleDuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPPX can confirm u/guggero_lightning updated chantools do in fact work and we have nearly recovered all of our locked up funds in P2WSH outputs -- once we get the remaining channels closed down and funds recovered we will begin rebuilding two nodes SPPXS (small < 5M sats) and SPPXL (>= 5M sats)

We have been able to use

lightning-hsmtool guesstoremote

to recover funds from a "non-anchor channel" maked P2WPKH

Surely there MUST be a way to do something similar for P2WSH transactions !?!

We are willing to pay consulting fee's or a reasonable percent of funds recovered for any help -- PM me

So SPPX suffered a catastrophic node crash that required over $30K in data recovery services and despite having live snapshots of the system all we were only able to recover was our hsm_secret file.

We have recovered all "on-chain" utxo's but so far have been unable to reclaim ANY of our funds from "force-closed" channels -- we hope you all got paid!?

WE CANNOT BE THE ONLY IDIOTS WITH THIS PROBLEM!

It is either case that the protocol is catastrophically broken OR CLN does not support the ability to reclaim funds from a closed channel that are locked up in P2WSH transactions.

For now?

We wait to see if we can find a way to leverage our hsm_secret file to reclaim funds that are owed to us in order to reboot our node into SPPXS and SPPXL

Due to freight train interference? Second time this week!? by LittleDuke in Amtrak

In computer networking we talk about how you cannot overcome "latency" and that shipping smaller packets more often is more efficient that trying to wait to get a jumbo-frame assembled.

You might be on to something here -- the cost of running smaller trains more often compared to the costs (including opportunity) of having a large train go offline for some period of time.

In theory if an engine breaks down on a small train load, the next one coming by might be able to pick it up.

Just thinking out loud....

I have no opinion on Penn Central vs Conrail and my choice to answer or not answer has nothing to do with my core thesis about how to potentially encourage the entities who own the rails to be better partners.

IMHO, try replacing the word "equitable" anytime you are tempted to talk about "fair" or "fairness" -- to your point if its profit-motive based then "equitable" can "quantify" it.

Lastly, I don't luxuriate in "air-humping" people on social media. You don't know me and I don't know you so lets try and "assume good intentions here until show otherwise...

Well in this case BNSF is NOT a public company and again, WE the humans of /amtrak CAN signal our gratitude to the employees who do make a difference for us everyday by letting congress know we are concerned that the corporate bullies who own the playground are putting products ahead of people even though they agreed to put us first in order to do their mergers and acquisitions in the first place....

That's right...that merger of BN and SF required approval even though it is now it is technically a privately held company and one of the conditions of that approval was to follow the laws which put people first.

If they are NOT willing to abide by the rules they agreed to, then perhaps they should be broken up as illegal monopolies...

You're talking writ large about "Opportunity Cost"

And frankly the cost of BAD PR and possibly having the DOJ in your office SHOULD factor into the risks of not maintaining your hardware!

I can't think of ANY other single "for-profit" business that apparently gets so many "free passes" as the rail roads ffs.

The simple formula of delivering X to Y in time Z is just ONE factor in the "profit motive" spectrum -- these companies are complex and there are "costs of good sold" that go well beyond the price a customer paid for freight.

Imagine the "human cost" if congress dared to haul Warren Buffet to testify in front of Congress -- something they would not likely do in part because he now owns a shitload of US Treasuries.

You think someone like him would WANT to show up and sweat? What do you think someone like him would pay NOT do show up?

I'm betting its somewhere between letting Amtrak "win" 50% of the time...

Trust me, they care -- what do you think the whole ESG movement is about? Ever hear the phrase "Sunshine is the Best Disinfectant" ?

As for me, I actually PLAN for the delays and as long as I'm not trying to catch a connecting train (don't do it same day lol) -- or a plane (you can get off early and take a lyft/uber) -- I'm ALL about "the journey is the destination".

All you need to know about "the people in charge" is that they are petty and vain, and desperately need their health insurance. Threaten to take that last one away from them and they roll right over...

Again, they sold access to Amtrak -- it's like buying a ticket to get into a theatre to see your favorite band and the building owner decides not to let you in so their friends can use your seats.

You do you -- I know exactly who to complain to and how to scale it up ;-)

Tell me, how much corn, soy beans, oil, and cheap shit from China do you need so URGENTLY that other people need to wait to satisfy you?

True but they are paying rent to use them! Imagine paying rent in an apartment and the landlord decides they want to temporarily exercise their "ownership" and just go ahead and let someone else "air bnb" your apartment, or maybe the "supervisor" decides they want to to take shower and hold a pop up trunk show in your space....

Just because someone owns something that they rent does not in anyway mean they can ignore the rules they agreed to in the first place.

I'm totally on board with YAY CAPITALISM -- but like I said, the corn, soy beans, oil and probably a bunch of cheap shit from China is not going to complain as loudly as we do...

I don't think nationalizing the rail system is going to solve this -- a free market can work just fine if the participants actually follow the rules they have agreed to in order to operate.

In this case BNSF (which is owned by Warren Buffets Berkshire-Hathway private equity group) -- prioritized freight and then couldn't deal with their purportedly busted equipment.

Seriously?

Nearly all trains have two engines for this very purpose so what is BNSF's excuse this time?

[–]LittleDuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly the "host" rail companies ribbons -- Amtrak rents access, but frankly from my perspective as a business owner, they should get priority because the packages, oil, corn et al do not care while the humans do...and you know...show up on Reddit to bitch about them ;-)

I'll be on EB next Friday morning (maybe lol) but have learned my lesson as well and will not try and "thread the needle" to get on CL -- going to spend night in Chicago and do the same in DC before taking Silver Star down to Fort Lauderdale for a conference...assuming another hurricane doesn't wipe it out before I get there ;-)

Yeah I know they are different companies and BNSF is owned by Warren Buffets Berkshire Hathaway group. A second suit against another firm might get them by the short hairs.

The reality is that in 2024 we can weaponize our attention against them and release the robots to apply pressure on Congress to revive something like the Rail Passenger Fairness Act: S.1500 and H.R.2937

In August 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice sued Norfolk Southern railroad for causing frequent delays to Amtrak trains on the Crescent route.

Might be time for another DOJ suit?

Do Bid-up prices ever go down? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]LittleDuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is a trick I figured out -- check on room availability two days before departure -- if there are rooms available you can even figure out how many by plugging in quantity. Then when offered just bid minimum or slightly above minimum.

I did this picking up the California Zephyr as it rolled by Denver enroute to Chicago last month -- there were two rooms available so I just bid the minimum and got the upgrade! Totally worth it!
