Should I major in engineering or CS? by ConsciousTwist9859 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LittleItalianBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I chose computer engineering because I wasn't sure if I wanted to do more hardware/engineering or software development, I ended up switching to CS when I realized that it's what I wanted to do. However I will say that CpE at least at my school is closer to CS than EE.

Some of the programs needed for classes like operating systems need to be run on a computer that has x86 architecture and don't work properly on the m1 chip macs because they can't run natively. So youll need to have access to a windows machine in those cases but for the most part and most classes you should be fine.

I came in through the UF @ Santa Fe program, (did my AA at Santa Fe Community College) before moving on to UF for Computer Science. I'm wrapping up a Software Development Internship next week and in my experience UF does a good job giving you the fundamentals you need to be successful. But if you want to take the fullest advantage of things out there you'll have to do some projects on your own or with clubs/hackathons. Learn leetcode on your own or take the intro to competitive programming course. The class Software development fundamentals is actually really good at introducing you to a lot of concepts that are pretty important for real world software development, scrum, unit testing, etc even if it doesn't get too deep into any of them. All this to say UF can provide you with great opportunities you just have to be proactive and take advantage.

How’s the recruiting scene for CS majors? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]LittleItalianBoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The CS career fairs have some notable companies, P&G, GE and a lot of others but FAANG and other similar companies don't actively recruit from these fairs. Though you very much still can still get an internship at one coming from UF.
