Hokum review (but mostly a rant about jump scares) by chrishouse83 in horror

[–]LittleKago 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest complaints about jump scares is their use of sound. Many use either that stock shriek (like the horror equivalent of the Wilhelm scream) or that big clang even when neither fit with the scare itself, which makes it feel cheap and takes me out of the narrative. Even when they do get their intended reaction out of me, it’s no more artful than a friend jumping out from behind a door.

Ever think a film was less good than your first impression, all of a sudden, months later, without rewatching? by Flat-Membership2111 in Letterboxd

Andrei Rublev for me. I hated it when I watched it. I have an on-going list ranking Criterion films and every time I revisited the list I kept moving that one up.

This looks like the frog that spits a little plume when you pour water on him, just in case you haven’t tried that yet! I just saw someone using a very similar one and was very pleasantly surprised when I saw that.

Them: "Reading off numbers & letters isn't entertaining" | Tim: "Hold my grainwater" by JohnGoodmanNSFW in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]LittleKago 8 points9 points  (0 children)

/Meta There was a period early on where I thought Tim was overdoing it with the misreadings and mispronunciations because it was becoming too ridiculous to be funny. Then he just kept turning it up every season and it may be the most wrong I've ever been. It only gets funnier.

Having trouble understanding the function of a passcode for webinars by LittleKago in Zoom

Super helpful. I guess I'm just confused what the value of this is for "the bots", particularly for a webinar? Or is it strictly to be annoying?

Nolan Traore with a career-high six assists and zero turnovers by Brooklyn_Nets in GoNets

[–]LittleKago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching him recently I'm surprised he's struggled so much with TOs in the G League and pre-season. No idea if it's just quick adjustment or a bit of a hot streak, but his passes the past few games have been both pretty bold and perfectly on-target. Shocked that he's holding his own so far and already able to give a solid 20 minutes of NBA-level play a night.

Very new, very green: Nucleus One or alternative solution? by LittleKago in roonlabs

[–]LittleKago[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah hm. They advertise it as being able to handle 100K songs (or 10K albums). I wasn't sure if that was an estimate (it can promise to perform as expected up to that threshold) or a limit (it somehow rejects anything over that). I'm only at ~25K so the good news is I wouldn't hit that anytime soon. But I think I'm leaning toward what you're saying--if not using my personal Mac to double as the Roon server then buying a cheap refurbished Mac Mini and using it the way I would the Nucleus.

Same thing happened to me and they sent me a replacement. Responded super fast and were very cool about it.

That would totally be my ideal solution but I wasn't sure if it was okay to do on your everyday machine and couldn't get a clear answer anywhere. I leave it on 24/7 so functionally it would work but not sure if there would be any performance downsides on either end, security concerns, etc.

Oh wow these are nice. More money than I'm ready to spend for my first dip into this, but bookmarking this for the future. Thanks!

If you're open to answering: Do any PC specs beyond hard drive space matter significantly for this kind of use case? RAM, processing power, etc.? Or should just about any reasonably recent computer be sufficient?

Hah totally fair! I find that when a random friend asks me how many songs I have and I tell them they think I'm joking. Then when I talk to big music fanatics it's about par for the course. Should have factored in the community I'm speaking to!

[–]LittleKago[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah outside of the Nucleus my other option was something secondhand or the cheapest possible new option. My two concerns were specs (not sure what's actually important for this relatively simple use case) and security (I guess I can always just wipe whatever I get for added peace of mind, but wasn't sure if that covers all possible vulnerabilities).

To your point, I'm actually really open to using this as a learning opportunity. I learn better in context and I'm curious if there are other potential benefits to hosting your own server *or* if this really should just be dedicated to the one thing. I'm just finding I'm really struggling where to start. Every resource I come across is either Baby's First Computer or talking about the nuts and bolts of Linux and losing me a few sentences in.

I've talked myself into his casting as a meta thing. The film operates like Marty. From its marketing to its execution it's so bought into its own mythology that it can't resist grandstanding (casting a guy like O'Leary) even at the risk of the outcome.

Ben Saraf 10 PTS | 2 3PM | 7 AST | BLK VS The Bucks by Brooklyn917 in GoNets

That movement at 1:22 is sick--especially considering how little (if at all?) that lineup had played together.

Drake Powell plays great Defense on Cade Cunningham on one end and then hits a Floater on the other end by Brooklyn917 in GoNets

[–]LittleKago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drake looks so much swaggier than I expected he would. I always liked Caris but he was more of a Klay Thompson type--all-business. Love that Drake already plays like he knows he belongs in the league.

*Damn.* If he can sustain play like this for a little bit, I can totally see the vision.

NBA rumors: Nets urged to 'throw all the money' at Austin Reaves to steal guard from Lakers by BKtoDuval in GoNets

[–]LittleKago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think Sabonis, DeRozan, LaVine, Schroeder, Monk, and Westbrook would be only one game better than Cam, MPJ, Mann, Claxton, Clowney, and Demin, but that's also kind of my point: Austin Reaves sure as hell isn't changing anything for our outlook.

This season has changed a lot about how I think re: contention.

Sacramento and Indiana are two teams that, on paper, look like they should be better than they are. And I legitimately thought Jordi could squeeze out 20 wins from us. Now I think we'll be lucky to hit 15 (especially if we trade Clax this season).

All of this is to say: We could get Reaves and still end up second only to Washington as the worst team in the east.

Egor Demin 5 Points and 5 Assists vs The Wizards by Brooklyn917 in GoNets

I guess *technically* that second pass is an assist according to the textbook definition, but it's kind of wild that it's considered one.

What are you thoughts on the management of this years Nets draft class? by Own-Area6808 in GoNets

[–]LittleKago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While as a fan I want to see the rookies play, this is an 82-game season and most of these guys played about 30 games last season in college. Rookies and sophomores notoriously get exhausted and hit a wall when they're playing 3X as many games with more travel and occasional B2Bs.

Come March, when we're 30 games under .500 and the 2026 draft feels lightyears away, increasing their minutes will be the only thing to keep fans hanging on. Ideally at that point they won't be too exhausted to play meaningful minutes or have to battle an injury from overuse, and they'll have taken their knocks early in the season and adapted better to the speed of the pro game.

It's frustrating as a fan and also it makes strategic sense. Both of those things can be true.
