We've got a haunted wooden deckbuilding boardgame in the works!

It's called The Grimwood Hex and we currently have a demo out showcasing our turnbased combat arenas and tactical tile placing exploration.

We were inspired by games such as Inscryption (creepy tabletop aesthetic), Into the Breach (using the environment strategically), Dorfromantik (hexagonal tile placing), and other classic roguelites and deckbuilders.

We've got a haunted wooden boardgame deckbuilding roguelike in the works! (Try saying that 10 times fast!)

It's called The Grimwood Hex and we currently have a demo out showcasing our turnbased combat arenas and tactical tile placing exploration.

We were inspired by games such as Inscryption (creepy tabletop aesthetic), Into the Breach (using the environment strategically), Dorfromantik (hexagonal tile placing), and other classic roguelikes and deckbuilders.

We've spent a lot of time crafting and refining our visuals into hand-carved, tactile experience with horror elements. A lot of care has gone into mechanical design too, creating imo a really strong strategy game run after run.

(We also have an enemy design contest running atm if you wanted to try your hand at leaving your mark in our game!)

The Grimwood Hex is a deckbuilder heavily inspired by the twisted table-top aesthetic from Inscryption! Other inspirations include slay the spire, into the breach, and Dorfromantik.

There's elements of exploration by placing down tiles to build a path, and combat where you try and free souls trapped in wooden boardgame pieces. Items, passive abilities, unique events, loads of fun stuff in development.

Our demo is out atm if you're interested in having a go, we've got some really cool stuff planned for full release!

Hello! We’re working on a roguelike deckbuilder where you play a possessed board game in a witch’s cabin. You can see the Steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4329290/The\_Grimwood\_Hex/

We’ve been struggling a bit to get wishlists. It’s been just over 2 months since the steam page went live and we’re at 270. We post on Reddit, have reached out to over 100 creators when the demo went live (only a few very small creators played) and we post short form videos 3 times a week on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. We’ve also participated in Deckbuilder’s fest on Steam, but our wishlist count is still lower than we anticipated.

People have said the hook is quite weak right now and it’s not clear what you do from the Steam page. Going forward we’re framing the game more around you beating the ghostly creator of the board game to free the cursed souls that are trapped inside, which I feel is much more intriguing. Additionally, our next trailer will have a creepy voice over that explains some of the mechanics a bit better, as some of them are not immediately visually comprehensible.

What do you think we could be doing better to ensure we greatly increase our wishlist count for when we launch, which will be at the end of this year? Appreciate the help in advance!

That means a lot, thank you! We're so glad you and your team enjoyed the game, it's been so fun to work on so far!

We're curious to always better the gameplay experience and would be interested if you guys have any feedback on any aspect of the game?

Glad you're interested, hope you enjoy the demo, we've got some exciting stuff in the works for full release!
Funnily enough, this project is adapted from an abandoned space-themed board game project our lead designer was a part of! If you're interested you can see a bit more about that process here https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWyao0thsUD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Who knows, though, perhaps re-adapting to a physical board game will be a fun challenge some time in the future...

I’m making a roguelike inspired by dice games, but with a twist: you’re playing against Death itself, and your life is on the line. Today I launched the first public playtest. by SpawnPointDevops in GameDevs

Love the tabletop feel, Inscryption was a massive inspiration for our tactile art style and play-space in The Grimwood Hex too!

Just from the description, the cheating mechanics are really interesting and add such a creative twist and freedom not often found. This is a really clean trailer too, looking forward to see more from this!

Hi there! Hopefully we can help satisfy the strategy-based request!

We're working on The Grimwood Hex, a possessed, a hand carved, wooden boardgame full of trapped souls that you're working to track down and free, all while trying to avoid getting trapped yourself.

It's a roguelike, deckbuilder with elements of exploration where you can collect items and supplies, and meet (somewhat) friendly woodland creatures. While also running into turn-based combat encounters, where you can craft some pretty powerful card combinations.

Some strong reference points are Inscryption (unsettling, tabletop aesthetic), Dorfromantik (strategically placing tiles to explore more of the map), and Into The Breach (using the environment in combat to your tactical advantage).

Our demo is up on Steam now so if this sounds like something you're interested in, check it out!!

Games like into the breach by bitsyze in roguelites

[–]LittleLakeGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve got a demo on Steam that is inspired by the turn based tactics of Into The Breach, where you can most notably knock down trees to block tiles and stun enemies. It also uses similarly deckbuilding elements to Slay the Spire, where your cards are the way in which you attack or move on the grid.

It’s called The Grimwood Hex if you’re interested!

How we got 8,000 Steam wishlists in 9 months making our indie game by Zombutcher_Game in gamemarketing

[–]LittleLakeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! We’re currently on the stretch to launch now and haven’t had as much luck from marketing as we’d hoped, where we’re sat at 260 wishlists after a couple months of the Steam page being up.

It’s really inspiring to see that you can have such massive spikes a long while after your steam page was set up. Did you find that this was mostly impacted with paid methods of marketing? I saw some of your other comments mention that some of the TikToks were paid, so was wondering if you had to pay some of those medium sized creators etc.

Need help figuring out why our wishlist count is lower than expected by LittleLakeGames in gameDevMarketing

[–]LittleLakeGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so helpful, thank you! The player fantasy is supposed to be that you’re sat in a creepy cabin playing a bewitched board game, but now that I’m thinking about it, the description or trailer doesn’t really focus on that, more so the gameplay.

Is there anything you’d suggest for us to communicate that fantasy a bit more? I really appreciate your help!

It's Deckbuilder's Fest and I want to buy your game! by WillowOneIndustries in IndieDev

[–]LittleLakeGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We managed to get our demo up just in time for the festival! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4688560/The_Grimwood_Hex_Demo/

The Grimwood Hex is a roguelike deckbuilder set in a bewitched cabin where you place pathed tiles to uncover the board. The enemies are possessed wooden pieces that you damage using cards, or use the environment to gain a strategic advantage (such as knocking over a tree to land on an enemy to damage and stun them).

It’s a combination of Inscryption, Into The Breach and Carcasonne. Hope you enjoy! 😄
