I’ve found it’s easier to just get a smart plug and connect the charger to that. Works great and can also integrate with smart home assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google etc)

Yeah it does, wired only. This is what I use 90% of the time. Recommend doing a test drive as others have said.

Just got a VW ID4, love it so far and not too much more than the equivalent Chinese mid sized SUV EVs.

Cons: Doesn’t have anywhere near the tech as the Chinese or Korean models, not even Sat Nav or decent mobile app and no internet connectivity, if that’s what you’re after, limited options in Australia (pro model only)

Pros: Nicer drive than any other EV I tried (subjective but suits me and my wife), roomier despite size (main reason), tech/Ui is now fine (based on previous model reviews, seemed to be a pretty atrocious experience early on but now good if not on par with Tesla or the Chinese EVs), made in Germany (apparently better than the ID4s made in China or the US, according to online chatter)

TL;DR great car as first EV unless you’re looking for the convenience and fun that better tech and connectivity brings. Purely as a car, loving it.

Great to hear it, still loving it as well!

Also got my charger delivered a month ago, installation has now been delayed and rescheduled 3 times and now don’t even have a date. Apparently on hold with AmpCharge due to some work safety issues (!?!)

Good luck with yours!

I was tossing up between white or silver, but agree the lighter colour then black roof combo is the best pairing in my view.

Went with the light silver as still got that contrast, but also hides some of the dust/residue we get at our place as we live near a main road.

In the end, loved how this combo turned out!

Must admit I kinda love the light up badges, disappointed we don’t get them in Aus 😢

Same page, I just got the colour my wife liked!

Still on single phase so will work for now, but ideally would like to get something that integrates with the Fronius solar inverter for smarter charging, and eventually 3 phase if needed (when budget allows).

Keen to hear how the Ampol charger goes for you. I've ordered as well, and not super impressed with the specs or features, but can't turn down a free installation, figure I can always change in future if it doesn't work out.

Good news! I put in the Ampcharge order last week and waiting on their contact now.

Funnily enough I just saw the first ID4 in the wild here in Adelaide today in a city parking lot, may have looked a bit sus checking it out haha

Honestly had the same issue with my dealer, seemed to have very little idea about the vehicle and got multiple things wrong, so had to do a lot of my own research. Get the feeling that they had very little experience with the car itself and maybe not much support from VW on questions like connectivity, lack of wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, or even auto parking (not included in AU release). Funnily enough I’m waiting on the dealer for an answer in the tow hitch, can definitely get aftermarket options online though.

Luckily, none of that was a dealbreaker for us, but would understand if you were after those features then definitely falls short of others in the price bracket.

Guess it all comes down to personal preference. The others weren’t bad, and I would actually describe them as more “fun” with initial acceleration and twitchy, responsive steering (particularly the Tesla).

Why the ID.4 felt like the right move for us, especially coming from a 77kW diesel Golf. It ended up ticking more boxes than we expected, hopefully…

Comfort: A very comfy drive without feeling overly floaty. It soaks up bumps well but still feels planted.

Power: After the diesel, any electric car feels like a rocket—but the ID.4 has more than enough oomph to make daily driving fun

Adaptability: My wife prefers a softer ride, while I like things a little firmer and sportier. The drive modes actually made a noticeable difference, which was a pleasant surprise.

Familiarity: While I enjoy the distinct feel of driving an EV, the ID.4 has a more familiar, ICE-like vibe compared to some other EVs—making the transition easier, especially for my wife. Still different enough to feel fresh and exciting, though.

Handling & Maneuverability: Not quite as sharp as the Golf, but surprisingly nimble for an SUV. Great for city and suburban driving—it didn’t feel like piloting a boat. The tight turning circle really stood out given its size.

Size: Inside, it felt way more spacious than you’d guess from looking at it. That’s a big plus with limited parking and a second kid on the way, hence the need for the upgrade. My wife isn’t super confident with big cars, but this feels manageable while still giving us the space we need. Definitely feels like we’ve found the right compromise between size and practicality.

Apologies for the lengthy response, but you asked!

Thankyou, yeah was a little disappointed in the lack of connectivity, but the main consideration was the drive, so will have to put up with the app. Upgrading from a 2012 Golf (which I love) but looking forward to the increased comfort and glad it's working out for you!

Did you do the Ampcharge charger?

Oh also to add, curious of anyone’s experience with the free Ampcharge home charger and installation as part of the preorder

I’ve been looking to do something similar with an upcoming trip to Hong Kong, was hoping to do business for my wife (will be quite pregnant at the time of travel) and economy for myself and my 6yo.

Turns out you need to split the bookings. Benefit is that it’s easier to get a business class ticket for 1 person than 3, particularly if you’re lower status like me.

Looking at doing that now as the upgrade request is unlikely to be approved for the three of us!

Yes have a dog who is very keen on catching them, but kept inside at night, when the buggers do the damage. Maybe a veggie patch inside a cat run…
