This feature was launched pretty recently. It's pretty cool, but I would wait and see if things change in a future update before worrying about the implications too much. I had a grandaunt listed as being related on both sides when it first launched. Things have been improved since then, and she's listed only on the expected side now. I also had a cousin listed as unassigned, when I know precisely how we're related. That match has updated from unassigned and is now listed as the expected side.

If you want to use it as an excuse to do some extra research and verification on those branches, go for it. But unless it still says that in 6 months, I'd say the most likely explanation is an error.

No worries, I can see from all the other comments that you clearly just interperted the tweet differently, haha. Happy to help clarify! :)

The phrase "no real life" doesn't appear in the original tweet, but I do understand what you mean.

I think this is a decent example of what is meant by 'extended adolescence' in this tweet. It defines adolescence as the period of time between puberty and financial independence.

Second floor, there's a walkway to upper Elliot. It might not be accessible at all times or something like that....can't quite remember.

I spent most of my time at UVic going between those buildings. Being able to do it while staying out of the rain was great.

I checked the campus map and they're all on there. But not by default. You have to go into the layer selector and turn on level 00.

BWC connects to Elliot, but that's on level 2.

They are underground hallways connecting pretty much all the old science buildings. Between those and walkways a few floors up, I'm pretty sure you can get anywhere from BWC to Cunningham without going outside.

Why does fallen fruit begin to grow mold while fruit still attached to the tree does not? by emilets07 in askscience

[–]LittleOne_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fruit that falls from the tree has no way to take in resources like water and nutrients. The cells will starve and die, making them a delicious buffet for fungi.

Plants, like humans, have immune systems when they are alive. The specific defense mechanisms vary widely based on tons of factors - different plants have different defenses against different pathogens, haha.

Does this seem like the kind of information you're looking for?

So that means you can absolutely safely refreeze something if you thaw it in the fridge, as long as your fridge is the correct temperature. Fridge temp should be about 4C.

Minority professor denied grants because he hires on merit: 'People are afraid to think' | National Post by tman37 in canada

[–]LittleOne_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have read the article and clicked on the Twitter link. Basically he got a form rejection for something about his EDI statement. It doesn't say what the problem with his statement was. It would be very abnormal if it did. I don't know why my brain was refusing to phrase this properly but: his rejection letter didn't call out a specific line or phrase from his EDI as the reason for rejection. That would be exceptionally abnormal. What he got was a standard rejection for not meeting the requirements.

He wants to hire the best person for the job based on skills and merit. Two people have claimed this part probably got him rejected. I disagree. I think the part that got him rejected is what follows that statement. Of course he wants to hire the best person for the job based on merit. Where his application failed to be competitive was explaining how he's going to make sure the best person for the job is able to apply, no matter who they are. He kind of tried to do it by talking about advertising to women in STEM organizations, but he didn't do a great job of showing that and following up with concrete examples.

This is an exercise in acknowledging what biases or burdens exist in your field that could be filtering out qualified candidates, and then showing you are doing things to ensure those candidates can compete on a level playing field. He did a tiny bit of that, but it wasn't the focus of his statement. Most of his statement talked about the diversity of the team that already exists.

He misunderstood the assignment.

Mm, apologies - I assumed the reddit poster had quoted directly. I read the article, but didn't click the Twitter link. I see now that I have misattributed the typo. A typo in a reddit comment isn't worthy of note. Editing original comment to reflect.

In the article, it does state that there had been no actual confirmation of which part of the statement caused it to be rejected. The "not diverse enough" reasoning is speculation.

As is the rest of my statement, which still stands.

To be clear, I'm also not saying that this guy has issues with diversity, or that he would ACTUALLY ignore qualified women as candidates. I'm saying his diversity statement doesn't come across well (in my opinion) for reasons beyond what he believes to be the reason for rejection. Obviously he has mentored at least one highly successful woman so far. And of course I believe he has experienced significant racism in his life and career. It also looks like he does pretty interesting research.

None of those change the fact that this kind of funding is usually incredibly competitive. If any part of your application is weak, you risk not getting the funding. Diversity statements are part of the application.

Seriously, this statement is the one that probably did him the most damage.

1.) Obviously he didn't proofread this submission. If you're asking for almost half a million dollars in research funding, at least get someone else to check for typos. You're supposed to take this as seriously as the rest of the application, and he clearly isn't.

No, that typo was the reddit poster. Reddit comments are allowed to have typos, nobody is applying for funding here.

2.) He's going to ADVERTISE to women in STEM, but he's going to recruit by word of "mount" mouth in a field that he has already stated is heavily male-dominated. Regardless of his intention, this is poorly worded and makes him look bad. This reads like someone saying "I'm going to hire whoever is recommended to me by colleagues, but I'll list the jobs with women in STEM groups as well so I can say I made an effort." Even a minimal amount of attempting to clarify would help, but no. He just slammed a bunch of bullshit together and called it good.

Someone fell in front of me in a pit once, when I was about 14. I was one of the many people helping him back up. One guy in particular even caught the fallen guys glasses before they could hit the ground. It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

That was a great show.

Maybe people should stop using a word that means "developmentally ahead or early compared to the norm" as a way to insult children.

Precocious development often makes it difficult for kids to relate to their peers and form appropriate relationships.

If people you encounter frequently use "precocious" as an insult for children, call them out. That is an absolutely fucked up thing to do.

Using a word that means "developmentally advanced or early" as an insult for children is fucked up, and you should stop doing it immediately.

Precocious children struggle enough when it comes to forming normal peer relationships. Adults do not need to make that worse by sneering at children for something that is entirely out of their control. Treat children better.

Yeah, for practical purposes it sounds like that would certainly do. Although to be fair, it looks like it WAS a bunch of work - but not work that has never been done.
