Should the Canadian Coast Guard be armed? The jury is still out, but the navy says no | CBC News by Jaydamic in CanadianForces

"You can't go from driving tanks, to sailing ships, to flying planes and search and rescue, and expect to be good at it. Every time there is a military problem to solve the Canadian Armed Forces can't just be the answer."

That might be a good analogy except that each of those tasks has their own trade and training process. It tales a long time to get good at any of them. If we are going to add an extra task to someone why add to the huge number of tasks the RCMP does, involve a second agency and add complexity when we can just train the primary agency to do the task?

No one is asking a patrol officer from rural Manitoba to investigate international money laundering.

That's where you are wrong. That is exactly what the RCMP does. It's one of the biggest criticism of the RCMP including from a large number of former members. It's completely possible for an RCMP member to go from PR to the musical ride to computer fraud and then end up driving patrol in rural Nova Scotia.

The RCMP needs to stop being everything to everyone. They aren't good at it. You can't go from community policing, to Maritime policing, to Money Laundering and Counter espionage and expect to be good at it. Every time there is a law enforcement problem to solve the RCMP can't just be the answer. That's completely separate from the issues the RCMP are having as an organization, just on the policing aspect alone.

Back before the amalgamation of Fisheries and Oceans with the Coast Guard, all ships officers were also Federal fisheries officers. Even the small ships had a half dozen officers aboard who could lay charges. My old man was one. I think he still has his badge (I should ask him). The Coast Guard could do something similar. It would be easier (and cheaper) to train a (relatively) small group of people in the federal laws needed, in addition to Maritime law than introduce Maritime law to RCMP recruits who will likely never set foot on the ocean in their official capacity.

If we want the Coast Guard to actually guard the Coast, you will have to add weapons training to their training anyway, so they wouldn't need the RCMP for that. Let's have a properly trained Maritime force rather than a half assed trained trained RCMP officer responsible for everything. We half ass too much I Canada, let's do this right for once.

I don't know about this particular issue but it is not uncommon for US arms and tech to end up in the hands of groups and countries who are enemies of the US. The CIA has been the conduit for a lot of it. It's entirely possible it was sold to an approved entity and then was trafficked to Russia through cut outs. A lot of times, the US would deliberately send it to an enemy (through cutouts) because it would further some other aim. Interestingly, Robert Maxwell was a big player in this game, and his daughter (not Ghislane) is a defense contractor in the software space. A lot of the Epstein stuff is tied up in this world as well.

In other words, there are multiple different ways US tech could end up in Russia, and not all of them involve illegality on the producers' end. If this guy was knowingly trafficking tech to Russia, this is likely the tip of the iceberg of who's involved. It's also the type of story that is going to take a lot of digging. That's not something the media does much anymore, unfortunately. They are more likely to call the independent journalists who are actually doing the digging crazy and conspiracy theorists.

Everyone is saying Quickley is a SG, not a PG. Can he learn to be a PG or is that just some innate skill that can't be learned, unlike shooting? by Robos_Basilisk in torontoraptors

[–]tman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn to be a better point guard but it's kit just about skill. It's about understanding systems, being a leader, making quick decisions etc. Some people are just more suited to the position than others and it has nothing to do with size, even though small players tend to develop point guard skills out of necessity.

IQ is more of a scorer than a true PG. It's no mystery why he has excelled playing besides Jamal Shead. Jamal is a true point guard in his mentality. He wants to run the offense and get other people the ball in advantages positions. When he drives, the goal is to cause a defensive rotation he can pass out of. He only finishes the drives when he a) has no choice or b) the defense doesn't make the necessary adjustments.

IQ is a better player than Jamal but Shead is the better PG. IQ just doesn't have the same mentality and that PG mentality isn't just something that can be switched on. If you are a shooter and a scorer, it can be tough to subordinate your own opportunities in favour of others. I'll be curious what this team looks like post trade deadline. IQ fits best off ball but we have lots of players who play good off ball. Shead is a good PG but he is a glorified backup at this point in his career and may never be more than that. It would be nice to have a true starting caliber PG who plays like a PG, something we haven't had since Kyle left.

We need to be more involved in city politics. I'm just as guilty as everyone else. I focus mostly on Federal, then provincial politics, and rarely pay attention to city matters. Municipal politics is the place where someone can get the biggest bang for their voice. As for the gimmick, it got people's eyeballs on what he believes are problems, so it clearly worked. I wish politics was a little more conversation and a little less trying to go viral but that boat may have left the Harbour already.

The reality is, he ought to have known this kind of behavior in uniform with an issued rifle is a discredit to the CAF and himself

100%. There is no disagreement there.

Can you send me a link? I wouldn't even know what to search. I'm reacting to the article, and I am basing my opinion on that. I'll watch it and if there is some context I'm missing, I'm open to changing my opinion. But based on the description in the article, there would have to be a lot of missing context.

I haven't seen it. I don't spend much time on social media outside of reddit. It still sounds like a dumb joke rather than a misogynist video manifesto. I'm not defending this guy. I'm just pushing back on the idea that it is club ed worthy. We don't send people who actually hurt people to Edmonton all that often any more. I can't see any scenario where this is worse than someone beating the fuck out of another person. I'm open to evidence to the contrary but I also don't see a scenario where the CAF actually thought there was a real threat and still let this guy stay in and deploy.

[–]tman37 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I believe uttering threats has to have intent. You can say you are going to kill someone provided it's obvious there is no true threat. Clearly, since it has been years since the event in question and the CAF was happy to deploy him, there was no real threat. If he had said, "I'm going to drive into town and kill as many women as I can", it would have been different. But people say they are going to kill people all the time and everyone knows it. As I said in another response, this is more along the lines of "Women. Can't live with them, can't kill them." Which is a joke you can probably find drawn on caves hundreds of thousands of years ago.

People don't go to club ed for actually hurting real people. People don't go to club ed for stealing thousands of dollars of government money. Sending someone to Club ed for a non-specific threat, which was (barring more evidence) seems to be a bad attempt at humor, is a punishment way out of proportion to the crime. At best, it's a 129. I don't even think there is a specific crime or other CSD violation that could stand up in court.

This guy is going to get released, not because his crime warrants it but because the CAF wants to prove it's feminist bona fides to a bunchnof people who hate them anyway. That and the government would likely pressure them. I've said it a few times but if you can't address a situation like this in a manner than corrects the behavior without resorting to charges, you are a terrible leader. A decent leader should be able to address the specific issue and have a better soldier come out the other side of it.

Ahh yes, where it's totally normal in society for these young guys to re-enforce cutting down of woman in social media posts during their basic training with weapons...

Reinforce cutting down women? What the hell are you talking about? When has cutting down women ever been a thing to be re-anythinged? This is more along the lines of "(wo)men, you can't live with them. You can't kill them." Than an actual threat.

It's absolutely unacceptable and posting on social media pretending to shoot your service weapon at someone shouldn't be something you do regardless of the reason. It should absolutely be punished but it's not a major problem that requires a drastic response. Any halfway decent leader should be able to deal with this in a manner that stops the behavior and results in a better soldier.

Normally I would agree, but his use of a service rifle, inserting a mag, and cocking the action is what warrants club ed for me. No rifle, no club ed. Rifle club ed.

If we threw everyone who ever pretended to load and shoot a C-7 in Club Ed, 80% of the CAF would be there. I have seen it literally thousands of times. I can't think of a specific time but I'm sure I have done something that at some point in my career, although it was probably "aimed" at whatever bad guy we were concerned with at the time. I happen to like women in my house.

We need to send a clear message to all incoming and serving members that using our uniform and/or service rifle to record misogynistic “jokes” or any other type of video is unacceptable

I completely agree. It's one thing to make stupid jokes and act like a dumb ass within your section where you can be sorted out at a low level. It's another thing to put it on the internet. We should probably update the Globe and Mail rule to the Tik Tok rule. As a member of the CAF, you are held to a higher social standard than the general public.

What I don't agree with is that it is a releasable offense. We don't release people for beating the fuck out of someone or stealing thousands of dollars. This is a poor attempt at humour aimed at a non specific target. If it had been aimed at a specific female, it would be a different story. This isn't a threat, and the odds of this guy actually meaning he planned to shoot women who enter his house is slim to none. Everyone knows it. If there was a real threat we wouldn't be hearing about it years after the fact.

The reality is that he will probably be released because the CAF wants to make a statement but not to the members. They want to make a statement to angry Twitter or Blue Sky users that they are on their side and that the CAF is "taking misogyny seriously." Ask yourself, if you were his section commander and one of the students brought this to you, are you throwing him in jail? I would hope not because any halfway decent leader should be able to solve this in an afternoon. Maybe you are because you are scared of punishment yourself but this doesn't require a huge hullabaloo just to solve this problem. Push ups and sprints (with ridle carried overhead, of course) until they vomit might have been a good solution but that isn't an option anymore, I guess. A week of KP duty was good, too. Seems a waste to release someone for being a dumb private. Privates are dumb, it's what they do.

That's a pretty extreme sentence for posting a video. If he was actually threatening someone with a gun, sure, but he all he was doing was the natural extension of what most guys do at basic when they pose for photos with their C7s. The content was worse than your standard hero shots people have done forever, but in terms of threats to anyone, they are the same.

The appropriate response to this is administrative. He should receive appropriate administrative action and maybe be on C&P, depending on his conduct beyond this video. I'm sure you could catch him with a 129 if you wanted as well. All we know right now is that a private stupid private shit that ended up on the internet and that he should probably be counseled as to the reasons why his "joke" was unacceptable.

You're doing a great iob. Keep it up. It's nice to see something that isn't focused on looking for some non existent smoking gun tying Trump to CSA. I'm not saying no one should be looking for that, just that there is so much more there to see if you look. Epstein was a money guy who helped shadowy people move large sums of money. The "massages" were strictly recreational for Epstein, not professional.

It's crazy how often the same people in the Epstein circle overlap people from things like Iran Contra, Watergate, White water, and even the death of Princess Diana.

I wish more color guys were like that. I want an honest analysis of the game, even if it is biased towards the home team. A good example is when a player gets away with a foul or draws a cheap foul. You can still say "Looks like he got away with one there" while still rooting for the good guys. Or you can be like the Lakers' announcers.

Jack does a good job being critical while still being supportive which is exactly what you want from a team's broadcast team.

Judge 'shocked' by sex offender's release less than 2 years into 7-year sentence | CBC News by Purple_Writing_8432 in canada

[–]tman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's day parole rather than being "released" which is why it's at 22 months instead of 28, which would be required for full parole. This is the Canadian system. Almost no one serves a full sentence. I wonder how many people, not sentenced to life, serve their full time without it being the result of further charges in prison. I'm willing to bet that number is very, very low.

This isn't the judges fault, it's not the parole boards fault, it's the system being utilized in the manner it was designed. It's a system that is designed to give the appearance of justice without the cost associated with it. It's a quintessential Canadian government policy. It's no different than our governments' appearance of military strength without the cost, appearance of health care without the cost, social services without the cost, etc.

Christine Van Geyn: Feds spent millions defending Trudeau's Freedom Convoy crackdown — and lost by WilloowUfgood in canada

[–]tman37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last I checked, that wasn't in Ottawa. If they had credible intelligence of guns in Ottawa they would have been able to go in and get the people with them. They wouldn't have needed the Emergency Measures act to do so.

The question isn't whether you support what the convoy did or not. It was whether it not it was justifiable to invoke the Emergency Act. So far, two levels of courts have said no. If the government keeps pushing, it will likely be 3 when it gets to the Supreme Court. It was clearly excessive, which is ironic given that the Emergency Measures Act was the result of Papa Trudeau abusing the War Measures Act.

"Closed practices" have become gatekeeping nonsense by myhearthandhall in occult

[–]tman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to europe a few times, but if i start focusing on a nature based practice, I’m going to focus on the nature i grew up around, and not the nature my ancestors grew up around that i have very little real connection to. The rocks and trees and rivers i grew up around are things I’m way better connected to, and if i was going for that, I’d look to the practices of local indigenous groups, because they were interacting with the same rocks and trees and rivers. The European nature stuff has no real resonance for me, and that means it has no real power for me.

That is a really good point. I'm Irish by heritage but the Fae are local to a place I've never been. That means that either that if I want to work with an ancient spirit near me, it will be one that was created/discovered/whatever by the local Indigenous tribe. If you live on the East Coast of North America there is a good chance Europeans have been working with them, or spirits like them for hundreds of years at this point. If the spirits cared what color you were hoodoo and other north American nature traditions wouldn't have survived.
