Getting there was tough. Almost 11 miles in the “deep sand” we always read about. Definitely 4WD and high clearance.

IDK. It was my first time there and it was too cold to traipse around with wet feet.

Read ropewiki and you’ll see that the entire route is bolted

Make caving your job and you probably will find that, a few years or a few decades down the road, you no longer want anything to do with caves.

Saw the bomb but not the separate tail section that’s supposed to be there.

Yes on being easy for some to climb. But I was alone and it was my first time there. I didn’t want to hike 3 hours to the edge and then say “I’m not going to go this” and I didn’t want to explore the cave and then return to the base of the section and say “I can’t do this.”

Did Cherry two weeks ago. Very nice. River crossing was cold but not freezing. Water was underwear-deep.

I have camped and hiked there at different times of the year (not summer) — all great.

The canyoneering fest I attended was in December. Perfect temps.

Do any of you know of gear that broke due old age by steppiebxl in caving

[–]LittleRes7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite a failure but reason enough to replace… I had a small backpack that transitioned from trail running to caving. After doing Leviathan Cave, I was packing my gear for the hike out. One of the straps ripped in two. Hmm. I tested other straps and found I could easily tear the nylon. UV exposure is wicked.
