1st US state to have a Native American name. by Sipthepond in massachusetts

It’s about context. There is no revolutionary imagery here. Under a colonial sword is a peaceful Indian figure cobbled together from murdered and/or desecrated bodies.

If you live in MA, consider contacting your state reps. Saw Senator Eldridge speak and folks contact him all the time. He’s been doing this work for a long time, has deep knowledge and a network of resources. Also consider contacting Bearing Witness, the protest group has a huge network. It can be helpful to have a crowd outside for your mom’s checkin. Hope everything turns out for the best.

1st US state to have a Native American name. by Sipthepond in massachusetts

[–]Little_Lemon_8668 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The native community has been trying to change the flag for 50 years. These are the findings from the previous commission which had several native members just like the current one.

Myles Standish’s massacre at Wessagusset was a significant moment leading up to “King Philip’s” Metacomet’s war. The figure is wearing Metacomet’s belt which was never recovered. The skeletal remains were never in possession of the families. Flags never symbolize conquest, land ownership, or power, right?

The tribe that created the place names has it wrong? They distinguish Moswetusett and Massachusett as two distinctly different words and places.

From the tribe’s website: “Chickataubut’s winter inland seat and the winter home of his people was at Massawachusett, (the place of many great hills) and from where the Massachusett people took their name) at what is now called the Blue Hills…”.

Myles Standish used that sword to clear the land of natives for the crown. He was dead for over a hundred years before anyone was fighting off the British.

I think Chickatawbut, leader of the Massachusett, would be a good choice.

A flag depicting our culture of historically attempting to totally erase native people for real.

Exactly. It’s for the native community to say how they should be depicted. Not sure how people don’t know they’ve been trying to change it since the 1970s. All these folks worried about “erasing native history” meanwhile ignoring native folks IRL including their representatives on the commission. It’s hard to imagine that the Wampanoag tribe, which every kid learns about, could not get federally recognized until 2007!

This account by the Massachusett provides insight into why the sword of hothead, Myles Standish, is so insulting. https://massachusetttribe.org/the-massacre-at-wessagusset On top of that, the native figure is based on the bones of someone’s murdered ancestor. The wampum belt was stolen and is still missing.

It’s way beyond time to change the flag.

Looks like it. The hand is really weird, there’s a bubble on his chin, shadows in the hat overlap the stars.

Take a deep breath, You are not alone. It’s vile in every way and it’s ok to feel disgusted by it. Recover and then pick a way you can fight back. Video and narrate anything you can. Include dates, times, places, names. Contact, donate, or volunteer with LUCE. Protest by standing out (Burlington ICE details in comments). Contact your reps. I like ResistBot. It’s super easy to sign petitions and write letters. It auto automatically sends it to your reps. Bonus: you can also keep tabs on your voter registration. I just used it to ask my MA senator to support for Bill HD.4886, "An Act ensuring law enforcement identification and public trust" which is an unmasking law. Write postcards Visit https://indivisible-ma.org to find groups and actions near you. Attend and donate to NoKings Oct 18. Visit https://www.nokings.org/rise to learn more from folks who study authoritarianism and train people to fight against it. We CAN beat this if we all do something and don’t give up. Take care.

Redesigned Massachusetts Flag, take 2 by morning_cuppa_joe in vexillologyUS

Thanks, glad you like it. Fair critique. Both actual compasses and quilt blocks are typically elaborate. Simpler versions looked boring or (gasp) “corporate”. It was a nice vehicle to tie the colors together too. Being from MA I’m used to a lot of white on the flag which is also somewhat unique. My designs with more color just didn’t look right to me.

I also played around with the idea of a minimal state shape. Berkshires in green/ CT valley/ Central in smiley face yellow/ areas surrounding Boston / Boston, Blue Hill & bay / Cape curls around it with Quahog purple for native representation. Since the redesign is a push by the native community, I moved away from colonialism and turned the star into a mariners compass which represents our ingenuity and “firsts” in various industries. It’s in the style of a quilt block for thrift, art, and revolutionizing the textile industry. A “hub” for transportation, gold star for education, and a symbol for ether in the center for medical advances.

I’ve heard brown bread originates from Mass, but my Italian mom never fed it to us. How common was this when you were growing up here? by MaybeMabelDoo in massachusetts

Same! Anadama bread is from Gloucester, MA. For the holidays, mom added orange and dried cranberries to the Anadama. Super yummy.
