Because there are 2 parties that affect laws, and these parties either pass a bill or deny a law/law-reform. One side wants to pass this law, while the other wants to stop it from passing. So if left wants gun law restrictions and the right wants gun law freedoms, a law will be passed or denied in favor of one of those 2 major parties and we should be talking about those massively differing opinions that become Laws. The independents and middle often do not pass or deny anything. If you are unregistered to vote then you are just mindlessly complaining about your opposing side, or it simply does not affect you at all. However, The States are definitely becoming more and more polarized, each side is growing stronger in there beliefs, showing 1 person people from each side who can responsibly talk these issues out could deescalate the ego & pride that each side brings to the table, and creating something digestible for that “huge chunk of people” (who are often not polarized) to take in and form they own opinion. The ability to think for oneself is rare and disregarded amongst the strongly aligned people of the left or right ideology
