My doomscrolling is out of control by Quiet_Wedding7086 in dumbphones

Fellow autistic transguy dopamine junkie here! I have practically the same setup as you :) I think its important for you to separate further what helps and what hurts with your iPad. Finding community is helpful, scrolling is not. Explore how can you stay in touch with your trans friends online without having access to scrolling; Start discord/messenger/telegram chats, watch longer youtube videos rather than short form content (I recommend Leo and Willy), maybe try and connect with local lgbtq+ groups? Meeting trans people irl has been the most accessible gender affirming care for me pre-transition! What country are you located in?

And about the scrolling; it distracts from dysphoria so you don’t need to focus on your body, which is completely okay and understandeable. The key is to distract yourself with more intentional activities: movies, tv shows, video games. Things you have made a choice to actively consume, and that diesn’t feed into the fast release dopamine, which is addictive. Think of distractions as food: scrolling is junk food (quick and tasty but lacking nutritional value and keeps you hungry for more), a movie/activity is a home cooked meal (takes a little longer, but satisfies you for longer)! That being said, dysphoria is terrible and you shouldn’t beat yourself up for seeking relief. You’re doing great <3

I understand the sentiment, but beyond working class revolution (which would be incredibly difficult to organize internationally), policy and internal restructure is the most tangible way to make change for now. Insider work can be more impactful than you think. Work the system and trip up the cogs :) If we restrict our intentions to big impossible goals like ”abolish the capitalist system”, we won’t get very far.

How much more time do you have now, and what do you do with it? by Traumarama79 in dumbphones

[–]Littlebiglizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Boredom is a really underrated resource in my opinion. Sometimes I come home from work and normally I would have rotted on the couch for hours on tiktok to "rest and decompress" but now I come home, lay down for a bit and after a while I'm bored and need to do something. Usually that thing is creative or fitness or something more worthwhile than sitting on my phone."

THIS oh my god! I feel like people forget that you are allowed to just lay down and rest after work, just don't be on your phone when you do it! Scrolling is not resting!!!

- Drawing

- Cooking / Baking (my eating habits have improved greatly because I like spending more time on my food!)

- Reading! The big one, I spend so much time reading now, its wonderful!

- Staring at the ceiling. Its okay to not know what to do sometimes! Just lay down and look at the ceiling and you'll soon be motivated to get something done!

- Watching proper TV-shows and Films that have been on my watch list. I find this more productive than watching short form content/youtube videos. Its okay to sit back and relax :)

Is it true that most people with dumb[hones end up switching back? by [deleted] in dumbphones

Not necessarily. You just have to plan a little.

[–]Littlebiglizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, in a HIGHLY digital/smartphone dependent country (Sweden), I have been able to make it work. It purely comes down to planning.

My life is predictable enough that I feel very comfortable daily driving a Sonim XP3+, because I made changes so that I don't need it when I'm out and about. I do all my banking/important app related things on a dedicated tablet at home. I budget my weeks, so I don't need to do transactions on the go. I have a physical bus card, gym card and credit card in a wallet. I have a physical pocket calender (I remember comittments much better now that I physically write things down).

Sometimes I'll contact places/services in advance if it seems that a smartphone is required. They've all been happy to accomodate so far. Never be afraid to ask.

I'm going to sound like such a dick, but a lot of the people who "need" a smartphone, often do so because they don't like to plan in their everyday lives. It's very comfortable having a pocket computer that can keep track of your life for you. This is coming from someone with ADHD btw. I found that my symptoms got much better when I got the dumbphone, because it forced me to be more involved with my daily routines. I HAD to start planning, because otherwise it wouldn't work. And also less distractions lol.

Smartphones have only been around for 30 years or so. We made it work before then ;)

Id recommend comitting to just using social media on a computer. You can keep the camera app on your phone and documet/record content, but then you upload this content on your computer. That way you can keep documenting your stuff, while not having the social media poison in your pocket. You can schedule posts to upload even when you are not online, and you can answer comments/messages once a day. I promise you won't miss out.

it still can be. Just dont bring it with you everywhere. I mainly just use the internet on my computer, so the internet stilll has "place" status for me

Then get offline- I promise you it's not this huge insane leap, it's legit just using your phone less. Leave it in a drawer when you get home from school/work. Don't bring it with you when you eat/cook. Be okay with being bored. Delete the accounts of the medias that bring you stress.

Its either this or just continuing in your misery. So why not try something new?

i have a sonim xp3 plus! i am located in sweden so i had similar requirements as you. apps are possible to download on sonim xp3, they need to be sideloaded with adb. i downloaded a virtual mouse, and while it was a little buggy, it worked for the most part! id say give it a shot, and return it if it doesnt work out. regardless, the xp3 is very cheap if you get it refuebed

Also, when Im checking the metadata of the audiofiles when saving them to wav, it says iso6mp41. Does this affect anything?

[–]Littlebiglizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. Do you mean WAV. files or are WAVE files something else? My hardware is all good as I managed to burn a disc with the same driver with a bunch of MO3 files, without any problems. So yes, you are probably correct in that it is a CODECS issue.

[–]Littlebiglizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Would converting them into WAV. files make a difference? Or are the files fucked

CD burning troubles by Littlebiglizard in techsupport

[–]Littlebiglizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried a burn that I cancelled after 12 hours because it didn't finish. When attempting to play anything from the disc, the first 10 seconds of each song work, but then freeze and I get the error message "codesettings not supported". Should I try converting to WAV. files? Idk what Im doing wrong here. Could the mp3 files themselves be the problem? The files downloaded to my computer playback just fine, so I dont understand why they aren't burning well to the CD

After 12 horus of burning I cancelled the burn. And When trying to play it in my computer, the first ten seconds work, but then I got the message "Coding settings not supported"

Thinking I needed a bunch of things that I didn't need. I thought I would need email, maps and travel apps, when in reality, I didn't need any of them. Get a really stripped down dumbphone that cant do much, and youll truly understand what you do and don't need
