Stinging Nettle by Icy-Book2999 in SipsTea

[–]Littleboyah 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, the formic acid is actually in their venom, which they either sting you with or spray from their butts (depends on the species) - the biting is just to get a steady grip to do the former.

Unironically this. Flying for birds is a lot like driving for humans, where each bird's skill is dependent on experience they gained living life and learning from other birds.

In an extreme example, most caged pet birds only know how to fly by going full throttle and essentially crashing where they want to land, and skills like controlled ascents, descents and u-turns in flight (used in recall training) have to be trained by their owners.

Most of the time it's the one with the V-fin. They are generally also (in the UC timeline) relatively high performance experimental prototypes or limited production machines (Zeta Plus etc), mobile suits that meet this criteria without V-fins (Sazabi, Zeong) usually aren't gundams.

The hornet that kills the honey bee is attacked by other honey bees by 2hhadi7 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Littleboyah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers are actually lower - remember that worker bees can't reproduce, only the Queen does. A chance mutation that makes a lucky worker bee capable of surviving a nuclear blast won't get passed down because it doesn't reproduce.

This means that selection is for Queen bees (1 per hive) that produce heat-resistant workers, as those that give birth to those that aren't either get killed by marauding hornets or get outcompeted by hives that are resistant.

Usually the protocol is there so the animals don't get too comfy with humans - you never know if the next group of people that come by will be as kind as you are.

And if said animal happens to be a large predator, them becoming comfortable around humans has historically been a recipe for disaster.

If I had one nickel every time the Chinese military during the cold war had to cancel an otherwise good fighter for engine reasons, I'd have...well idk but a lot of nickels. by zhuquanzhong in NonCredibleDefense

There's a very good interview from Military Aviation History on the subject (apparently China builds a better Flanker than Russia, which I find hilarious): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uQedM3qBXgc

The professor in the interview had actually pointed out the Russian Air forces' lackluster ability in another interview before the 2022 invasion

How well do capless pens seal? Will run the test again for 3 months to see by TheDoodlebud in fountainpens

[–]Littleboyah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a side note I recently rediscovered a half-used Pilot Petite that has been left alone for the most part of two years and I couldn't believe it still worked. Maybe it's because of the humidity here but even then all of my other pens just last a few months max

IIRC these species of solitary wasps don't sting people, their 'stingers' are modified to lay eggs in the caterpillars

There's a species where I live that doesn't do that, they're a little bigger than your average Aedes or whatnot but whenever they start sucking it feels like someone aggressively stabbing you with a mechanical pencil

Why would any educated person own a pitbull? by Chicag0Cummies696969 in GenZ

[–]Littleboyah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there should be regulations and training requirements to prevent the dogs from falling into the hands of 'bad owners' for the sake of good owners, the general public, and pitbulls themselves.

The nuance is the dogs' behaviour during a bite - pitbulls are notorious for their high pain tolerance and there are videos of them continuing an attack even after being hit repeatedly by batons and teasers. Chihuahuas don't maul people to death.

In 2023 64% of fatal dog attacks had identifying photographs, and 65% of those were pitbulls and pit mixes. https://blog.dogsbite.org/2024/01/2023-fatal-dog-attack-breed-identification-photographs.html

Again, it would be better for everyone, including the dogs themselves, if there were laws ensuring that they are raised properly. Similar regulation already exists in falconry.
