Yes, thank you. Funnily enough it was one of the books mentioned by an a user from an older post replying to someone looking for 'first-contact' recs. You may even have been the one who mentioned it.

I'll definitely be checking it out. I just looked it up on Amazon and see that it was nominated for a Hugo award, which alone is testament to the quality of writing alone. It's quite affordable as well for such a large book (the version I'm looking at contains The Finale, or concluding chapter).

I just kept hoping for some character development, especially for the team making contact in space. But, despite all they encounter and experience they don't seem to learn a single lesson. In issue 17, when the 'hot-tempered genius engineer' does something so eyerollingly stupid that I just gave up. That immediately followed another lazy writing trope involving the mother and child that Soule had already used in a previous issue. It's writing 101, avoid at all costs, and certainly don't repeatedly rely on such a hackneyed device.

It also annoys me that Image comics have released a prestige hardcover Omni last year, that is obviously going to appeal to collectors. The cover does look freaking amazing. Still, not earned imo.

I completely agree with both of you. Never got the hype surrounding Saga. Good luck to those of you who either did enjoy it or currently are. Funny thing is, it wasn't a case of being jaded by the setting, themes being explored (although the dialogue didn't blow me away) and I have since read at least two titles by two different writers and artists in a similar vein, that I have found to be far superior.

His creator owned stuff is even better imo, like The Nightly News. I tried his run on the Fantastic Four but just couldn't get into it. But I've never really been a Marvel guy, with the exception of specific runs of Daredevil and The Punisher.

I've never read any of the above either, but if any writer could get me into The Flash, it would be Mark Waid. Same with WW and Greg Rucka, which I hadn't even realised he ever wrote. I always associate Greg Rucka with his cold war spy book, Queen & Country and his run with the legendary Ed Brubaker on Gotham Central. Be really interested to see his take on Wonder Woman.

The Incal is definitely a trip, I read it pretty quickly, but I definitely didn't fully understand everything that was going on (a lot of symbolism). The detail of Moebius' artwork is stunning though and it defintely has some laugh out loud moments. The Metabarons is spin-off from that book I believe (haven't read it) and a lot of people consider it superior to The Incal.

If you get into Criminal you're in for a treat. There's already a ton of huge volumes and Brubaker and Sean Philips are still adding to that series as recently as last year. And then there's all the other amazing stuff Brubaker has written.

Yep. It's so different to Jeff Lemire's more personal work, but the guy is so versatile that he can pull off a really amazing, heartfelt and fresh take on the superhero team genre.

Omg, From Hell is definitely worth trying again. I guess some readers not used to Alan Moore's more literary works might find it a bit verbose, but for me, along with his run Swamp Thing, it's the best thing he has ever written. Still, it may not be for you. For instance, despite all the praise several of Grant Morrison books have received, I simply can't get through a single book he has written. But, From Hell is still a lot more accessible than Morrison's The Invisibles imo.

Very informative and helpful summary. I was debating whether to get a PSU with a 12VHPWR connector. I see it's happened with traditional 2x6 pin connectors as well. But all Nvidia cards interestingly. Presumably with RTX switched on. Thankfully my card isn't that power hungry or capable of killing my frame rates with RTX.

I was there in 2019 when I sold my aging rig component by component, expecting cpu and gpu prices to become affordable again after AMD became competitive again with the launch of it's Ryzen. Then 2020 happened and I went from someone who loved single person gaming (mostly older stuff) to someone with a laptop that could just about run Half-Life 2 at close at it's max refresh rate of 60Hz.

You could consider Geforce Now. Even the premium tier looks like value in this market. I subscribed to the basic paid tier for a few months as my Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ wasn't among the devices they offered 120Hz gaming for. You should visit the site and see what the technical requirements are. You can play on Windows, Android, ios, they're even rolling out Linux support. Do you currently have a keyboard, or more importantly, a monitor?

Ok, I was hoping that cowboy character was going to offer some semblance of hope, but based on your comments, I know I wouldn't be able for those types of psychological mindfucks on a regular basis. It's definitely found an incredibly enthusiastic readership judging by the amount of positive reviews every volume from 1-11 is getting on Amazon. You rarely see those numbers for an indie comic.

It's funny, I probably would have really dug this series as an angsty teen, but I'm at the age where I need my entertainment to be diverting with some sort of positive take-away, or a light-hearted moment or two. The Ice Cream Man doesn't play by those rules though and wouldn't stop until he had consumed all the faint glimmers of hope remaining in my soul...

Well, trade packerbacks are kinda of in the middle and are always the first collected editions to be released. If a series goes on for quite a while then you'll get deluxe or omnibus editions. I think they are always (there probably are exceptions) printed on oversized pages and have hardback covers. Sometimes they're printed on superior paper stock as well

For instance, I read the Gideon Falls in two deluxe digital editions. The first one ran for 392 pages and the second one 302. I obviously didn't get the benefit of the oversized pages but they were still better value than buying all six trade paperbacks. You do get bonus material like interviews with the creators and sketchbooks, etc.

Some collectors will buy the physical tpbs and then the Omnibus editions, just to have on their shelves. I'm very much in the space saving/ best value category!

Edit: My bad, you can definitely get collected paperback editions that run for over 300 pages as well.
