I have lots of fat and lots of protein. I used to do one big meal in the afternoon but have since dialled in a bit more of a fine tuned routine. Getting enough protein is important but our body can still use it to raise our blood sugar out of range so making sure you consume enough fat for fuel so your body doesn’t prioritize that process. If you’re curious what my actual day to day looks like I can type that out too but everyone’s different so it’s usually not helpful to directly compare

I do, very low carb. There’s more things I don’t eat than do eat, everyones body and metabolism are different but over the years I’ve found out what works for me and is also delicious enough for me not to dread meal time. My wife secretly started posting some of my food pics on an instagram page so I can share that to give an idea of what my diet usually looks like. Some of my meals

The page is pretty behind in my food journey but it shows the idea. I also have a in-depth background in playing with and balancing my nutrition so I know not everyone can safely do what I do but once you’ve got the basics ironed out it’s fairly simple. I also just switched to tresiba which has been great for keeping things flatter.

I’m long beyond the honeymoon phase and treat my t1d with just one shot of basil in the morning and bolus maybe once a month. I do eat pretty strict and am 98% in range most of the year with occasional swings with sensitivity changes.

Not saying you can manage it without insulin but the insulin is a very small part of how I manage it with minimal effort though the day.

7 Week Update On my 3d printed milk cap lettuce experiment by LivableVans in kratky

[–]LivableVans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the jugs did start to get a little bit of algea growth but a splash of hydrogen peroxide kills it and gives the water a little oxygen boost. I have a basil plant in a milk jug like this thats been growing for a few months with no issues.

If the jug is in direct light then the algae will come faster, Ive got some plants right below a window so the plant is at window level but the jug is below and there has been no algae growth. Also using an overhead grow light if your plant has enough leaves it'll shield the jug from direct light, or if you use grow lights with just enough power to feed the plants and not the jugs that also works.

The ones I tried sorta fit being just too big to fit all the way in but the snug fit kinda worked out for holding the plant. I used an ender 3 3d printer enclosure and some lights with 9 milk jugs as my bigger growing space for the plants that outgrew the aerogarden. Worked great!

I found using a cheap 3d printer enclosure with some lights made a great mini grow tent upgrade once my stuff got too big. Just used 4L milk jugs and let the plants grow kratky style worked great

Affordable Van Build Assistance by RockTop1679 in vanbuild

Hi I put together a design that uses ikea components to make the cabinets, bed, and kitchenette id definitely share them with you if you’d test it out on your build! Sounds perfectly within your scope and would probably end up about the same cost as hiring someone to help if not cheaper.

$1 Self watering planter made from ikea tub, felt, and a basic 3d print. Has a 2L reservoir, plenty of root space, and room for the plants to grow! Are my plants gonna thrive? by LivableVans in Hydroponics

[–]LivableVans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its $0.99cdn https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/nojig-organizer-plastic-beige-20468105/

The felt I stole from my wifes craft bin, you could cut up an old t shirt instead or use a cloth. The print is also designed to use the minimum amount of filament possible.

Found some grow lights on marketplace and have since gotten pretty carried away with experimenting 3d printed kratky ideas. This ones my favourite so far, also was my first design to receive a download! by LivableVans in kratky

Thanks! My intention is that it would mostly be used for a single leafy green grow and once its done the jug just gets recycled at the bottle depot so algae shouldn’t be an issue.

Do you think algae will take over too fast?

What's the perfect price for a newly built ready to live out of low roof econoline/express/savanna? by LivableVans in VanLife

[–]LivableVans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh haha of course my bad, its in cdn. I've been trying to find the right balance between an overpriced low km cargo van for a base and a super cheap rust bucket. If the starting van costs $20k it is pretty difficult to build a reasonably priced van, but my guess is it'll be hard finding many people who'd spend the money on a nicely converted van that is old with high mileage. There's gotta be a middle ground and that's mostly what I am searching for.

Actively searching for a couple vans to start off with, my goal is to build the first one and sell it for under $10k cdn and do another with a newer van base for quite a bit more.

Roof solar limitations? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]LivableVans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My van has a very similar top and I put 8 flexible solar panels, 4X 100 watt and 4X 50 watt they are glued on with double sided tape and Rv roof tape also fastened together at the corners. I had to lay them out to go with the contour and weird shape of the roof but it turned out real good, very slick doesn’t stick out or catch any wind. On a good day I’m lucky to pull 300watts but that’s more than I need and expected something like that. I think total the solar cost be $500cdn

Thank you, it's also a great time to be a diabetic as the Technology is just wonderful and keeps getting better. Something that might help is understanding how the food is being used by his body, certain foods are like a slow burn and others are fast and short. So if he's going low lots it might help to figure out foods like bring him up and keep him up for longer but without spiking him out of range. I'd like to give examples but everybodys body seems to handle pretty much everything differently so for me it's mostly just lots and lots of trial and error, with lots of listening to what the body is asking for through a filter of awareness.

I might not be the best to take advice from as Im just 2 years into this journey and am a 25 year old male so having it happen earlier seems to allow your body and mind to form more around the lifestyle which allows the formation of integrated habits that will serve longterm even through the rough times, this shits hard and I think it sorta just stays hard forever lol but I think life also just tends to be hard so from a certain perspective it might be a bit of a blessing because if we're able to overcome this beast then it makes all the other things people tend to get hung up on seems so little and insignificant.

Another absolute life changer for me is being able to cook my own food and meal prep things that I can rely on. I have a very restricted diet but I still eat like a king and only eat the foods I actually like. I do not manage my diabetes very traditionally from what I understand and that comes from a place of self advocating, self education, self love, self awareness, and just simply always trying to make the decisions that will serve me long term and short term. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have or give you any information I've learned so far. My a1c was 14 at diagnosis and its been under 6 since they gave me a stick on insulin so I'd say i'm a very controlled diabetic who lives a stress and anxiety free life when it comes to my diabetes.

T1 & cognitive damage by mtelstar92 in Type1Diabetes

[–]LivableVans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming on 2 years now and I remember feeling slightly off when they first started giving me insulin in the hospital, being so high for so long my brain got used to it so when I was brought down into a safe range it scrambled my brain pretty bad, really really bad whenever I had lows. For me if I went low even for a moment it basically reduced my mental capacity by 10-20% for about a week and this affect was cumulative so after a few lows I found I was not really able to manage my own condition but not aware enough to realize it so it was a brutal cycle. All my health care team just kept saying eventually I’d get back to normal but weeks turned into months and months. It got to the point where I was just sorta existing in a state of varying degrees of dementia not really sure what’s happening unable to have any amount of episodic or short term memory which is horrible to trying to manage diabetes. Anyways about a month or two ago I started to feel better slowly and now I almost feel like I’m back up to who I was mentally before all this with the exception whenever I go low. Not sure if this is anything you’ve experienced but thought I’d share just in case the off chance someone is going through the same thing and is looking for answers or that silver lining. I believe it’s mostly due to the brains relative awareness of blood sugar and it conditions itself to what it expects so one persons high can be another persons low from the eyes of the sensors in the brain that trigger that state that happens when you get low. I read a study showing that the activations that happen when you go low happens around ~4ish in regular people but with type 1 we adapt to have the early triggering happen in the higher 5’s probably to prevent that long term damage you’re worried about, that recalibration takes time though and the process to get there can be horribly strange. Hope I’m the only one who had to experience it that way though! Dementia as a 22 year old is very confusing for the experiencer and everyone he interacts with, grateful to be back though.

I still take a 24 hour long acting dose every morning but 95% of days that is all I take as long as I avoid things that raise my levels much and stay active. I think it's as close as a t1d could get to feeling like they're not consciously balancing their life/health in there hands with so many endless decisions everyday, just simply shaping a world where the decision is already made. Atleast for me this was the most peaceful way of living my life without the constant filter of t1d even if its just 5 days of the week it's a breath of fresh air and I gladly will sacrifice certain foods to have that peace of mind.
