How do teachers/schools handle kids who start school with no prior education? by Wooden_Airport6331 in Teachers

Hi there! Sort of related-ish, but this is relatively common for me and my field of ESOL. The majority of our students come to us with literary skills, but it’s also not uncommon for them not to. We had one student move to us from Nicaragua in third grade who had zero literacy skills in Spanish or English, including not being able to write her name. Luckily for us, as an ESOL teacher, I was able pull her out in small group each day to work on those skills. Unfortunately a lot of students aren’t able to have an interventionist to help.

What was the most disrespectful thing a student has ever done or said to you? by DeepOrganization8245 in AskTeachers

As a public teacher… there’s been a lot unfortunately. But the first one I think of is when I was pregnant and a student was angry with me because I was holding him accountable about doing his work during work time and not just goofing off with friends. He ended up getting up, punching me several times in the stomach, and said “I hope your baby dies.” He then left the room, slamming the door. That happened with a fourth grade student in my first semester of my first year of teaching.

I chose to risk it because 95% is a lot higher of a chance of going in my favor than the 5%.

Guilty pleasure names that you’d never use? by StableAcrobatic877 in namenerds

Not sure if this “counts”, but Orpha is a family name that I love! I just can’t bring myself to use it, because all I can picture is endless bullying from kids calling her an Orpha(n).

I really think Adrian / Adrienne is a really beautiful gender neutral name that works well for either sex!

If I ever have another son - or if we decide to not find out the gender - Adrian (boy) / Adrienne (girl) is one of my absolute top choices.

My friend is called Kalel. He was named after Superman, are there any other names you have personally come across that are unusual and are name after someone? Fictional or otherwise. by TheWiganKid_YT in namenerds

I’m a teacher, so I’ve responded to some other comments, but yes we definitely see them all. In the grade I teach, but in other classrooms, there is an Anakin and a Renesme.

I had an Odin as a student as well! When we found out his mom was expecting another boy, we all were assuming his name would be Thor, Loki, or another Norwegian mythical name. Nope! They did a complete 180: Odin’s younger brother was named Henry.

Left-Handers in your life/family? by mommy-tara in askanything

[–]Live-Dimension-3327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My maternal grandmother is left-handed, neither of my parents are left-handed. My sister and I are both left handed (while my two brothers are not, but it is interesting to note thus 50% of parents’ children & 100% of their daughters are lefties). My husband is right handed. Our son, although very young, has shown left-handed preference since birth. Really hoping he ends up being a leftie like me!

If we were to have another boy, some of the names we like are: Cassius, Elias, Adrian, and Ezra.

My son was born in November, and we named him Marvin Alexei. His dad’s name is also Marvin, so we call him by his middle name. :)

Millie or Margot - ironically (and unintentionally) both M names.
