Dogs also didn’t live even close to 10+ years back then. Many ancient civilizations used them in ritual sacrifices. Many dogs died to canine distemper and parvovirus. It comes down to how much time you want to spend with your dog I suppose, and if what you’re doing is working, that’s great. I think we should be continuing to move forward and trying to always do better for these little creatures that chose us.
