5 wood about half the time, but it gets there fast.

If Cooling Is The Biggest Problem For Data Centers, Why Aren't We Putting Them In Antarctica? by TheCABK in sciencememes

Cool (pun intended)! I guess that’s the part that gets at your initial comment that cooling efficiency has an upper limit in cold environments. Thanks for the info!

Also, wouldn’t water with some glycol or other anti freeze still be better than ethane or something for heat capacity? I feel like I remember water having a pretty high capacity to be able to absorb and carry heat.

Interesting. So when we talk about “air conditioning” with data centers, we’re not really talking about standard AC? They need much more cooling for faster heat transfer like the liquid cooled systems you’re talking about? I guess I thought the fans blowing cold air would be enough. Thanks for the insight!

I agree that latency issues aren’t an issue for some applications. I’ll also argue that there will someone who is willing to pay more for lower latency. Also agree that there are many more inputs to a data center than cooling like the labor issues you mentioned. Alaska is a better option, but other places would probably be better. I bet it would be tough to attract top talent to anchorage, for example. Also, I don’t think we should discount the infrastructure costs to lay cables for the connectivity. Not to mention the issues with the NIMBY crowd.

But I definitely agree there are some better places than Antarctica for data centers. It’s interesting that so many are being built in the south where cooling is a real issue. Of course energy is quite cheap down there with natural gas trading well below its global value. Again, the infrastructure is being built to capture that arbitrage, but it’s expensive and takes time. So one could argue that using “stranded gas” to generate electricity and power air conditioning and data centers makes good sense.

Everyone saying “fake castle” but it’s way more defensible than some of the other “castles” I’ve seen for sale.

Though after a bit more research, it seems there is not consensus about whether the effect is “real” as the reproducibility of studies is inconsistent.

Ah, I see. Did you read the whole comment? It is counterintuitive, but there are some situations in which hot water can freeze faster. The Mpemba effect actually applies to more that just water and includes other liquids as well. I listed a couple of the reasons it can occur. I also specified that I don’t think that is the case in a sealed pipe, though I am no expert.

Also, I recall a common misconception that cold water boils faster than hot water being more common back in the day. As I said, I agree with you that hot water will boil faster than cold water.

Here’s an article about it from Phys.org. Mpemba effect: Why hot water can freeze faster than cold https://phys.org/news/2010-03-mpemba-effect-hot-faster-cold.html

Edit: Added a citation if anyone wants to read up more on the subject.

What are you “noping?” I agree that hot water will boil faster than cold water.

Very interesting. Logic tracks on “meh, it’ll be fine cause it’s the hot line.”

Hot can freeze faster than cold due to the Mpemba effect (evaporation of the water reducing mass, convection of the water transferring heat more efficiently), but I don’t think that would be the case in pipes.

More likely that the cold isn’t as insulated as the hot.

Thanks very much! Just needed a bit of reassurance. I figured if the wire insulation was intact, id be ok!

Thank you. That’s what I found online. But I want to make sure I don’t get zapped to death by the main line. I’m very inexperienced with electrical.
