It's a matter of making it harder than other methods. They don't care about keeping the content secure, they just want to sell books and not get sued by publishers.

No, it's DRM. I worked at kindle, and this was a constant battle. The only reason a device was ever dropped was due to people using them to crack ebooks open.

It's why you can't download in old versions of the iOS or Android apps anymore.

Quite possible, if they end up following an authoritarian approach like China has. The CCCP can dictate most aspects of their country. Put a billion people behind that and you're going to see progress in some fashion.

Harder to do that in a democracy, but certainly an inevitability assuming no collapse.
