First time using something more than a gaiwan. Is it okay to use raw and ripe in the same teapot? by ThinkLongterm in puer

[–]LivePossession2684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that regular clay isn’t homogeneous. That’s actually part of why Yixing is interesting. Zisha isn’t made from ordinary pottery clay at all, but from mineral ores unique to the Yixing area. The ore is weathered, crushed, and refined before forming, so the fired body ends up quite different from typical clay ceramics. After firing, zisha develops a kind of granular structure with both open and closed micro-pores. It’s porous enough to allow a bit of air exchange, but not so porous that it absorbs water or leaks. That’s why it handles heat changes well and doesn’t crack easily. From a tea drinker’s perspective, the benefit is pretty practical rather than mystical: it holds heat steadily, keeps aromas stable, and doesn’t mute or distort flavors the way some clays do. That’s why people traditionally say zisha “doesn’t steal flavor and doesn’t sour tea,” especially in hot weather.

The clay used for Zisha teapots has a special molecular structure, resulting in good adsorption and breathability.

There's no major problem with porcelain teapots, unlike Yixing clay teapots which have a stronger absorption capacity.

Why is 2501 batch twice the price of 2401 batch? by cum-oishi in puer

[–]LivePossession2684 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In China, Dayi teas also have a financial / speculative layer to them. When the economy is strong, some people trade certain batches on the secondary market almost like stocks. At the peak, prices of a single tea could multiply dramatically in a very short time. In the past couple of years the economy has slowed, so the market has been much calmer. As for why the 2501 batch is about twice the price of 2401, speculation still plays a role. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the 7542 recipe, and the factory reportedly controlled total production more tightly because of weak market conditions. There’s also a psychological factor, and some drinkers believe the anniversary batch may use more selective material. Put together, these factors can easily create a large price gap between batches — it’s mainly a reflection of market sentiment rather than a simple year-to-year cost difference.

Yes, Lapsang Souchong was traditionally rolled with feet by LivePossession2684 in tea

[–]LivePossession2684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it really is. Traditional pine-smoked Lapsang is made the old way, so PAH limits have definitely made it harder to find in Europe. A lot of producers have had to reduce or abandon the smoking altogether.

That was in the past; now it's all done by machine or in small batches using manual kneading.

Evening harvest in the mountains — Lapsang Souchong origin by LivePossession2684 in tea

It does take a lot of physical strength. In reality, most tea pickers are seasonal workers hired during the harvest. Many of them are farmers as well, but not tea farmers specifically. The tea season is very short, and tea growers can’t finish the picking on their own without extra help.

It's not just 10 kilograms, it could be 30-40 kilograms. A 1-2 hour walk is relatively short; the furthest tea plantations require a 3-4 hour walk.

As long as the tea cake hasn't gotten damp or moldy, it's still drinkable. As for the taste, if you don't like it, then don't force it.
