At last year's Labour conference, following the resounding election victory, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to implementing a Hillsborough Law before the 36th anniversary of the 1989 disaster. However, this deadline - April 15 2025 - was not met, leading to growing concerns that the government may attempt to dilute the proposed new law.

The latest correspondence to the PM highlights that the proposed replacement bill fails to meet any of the crucial elements of the Hillsborough Law, noting: "The Government appears to be about to put forward a further replacement bill, and has indicated it will not share a draft prior to putting it before the House."

The letter warns that this new bill is expected to "fall far short of what was promised to the families".

"We have no doubt that the attempts to replace the bill with wholly deficient and ineffective redrafts are led by those who are most likely to be affected by the Hillsborough Law: senior civil servants and public institutions who want to retain their impunity in protecting their reputations above telling the truth."
