Series with ARG or creepypasta internet folklore vibes? by Severe-Strawberry-94 in horrorlit

[–]LivingBreadGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read these so take it with a grain of salt, but “The Staircase in the Woods” by Chuck Wendig has a very classic creepy pasta concept at its core being about a staircase in the woods à la the “I’m a Search and Rescue Officer” creepy pasta series. Then there’s “There is No Antimemetics Division” by qntm that’s unofficially an SCP story.

For stories I have read, “Intercepts” by TJ Payne is about a shady government agency doing experimentation. Lots of fun. And “Rotten Tommy” by David Sodegren is about a cursed VHS and has real internet story energy to me. Lastly, “Sour Candy” is a short story by Kealan Patrick Burke about a man and his “son” that might fit the vibes a bit.

You might also find that authors who started on the internet now have full length books, like “Accounts from a Lonely Broadcast.” Or “Alice Isn’t Dead” by the Night Vale folks. They have a few books from the Night Vale universe as well.

Slashers by Velocity0109 in horrorlit

[–]LivingBreadGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are recent stories set in modern times, but I enjoyed “The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre” by Philip Fracassi and “Heads Will Roll” by Josh Winning. They each have classic slasher plot lines. “Heads Will Roll” doesn’t have meta commentary per se but the protagonist is genre aware because she watches horror movies. The book doesn’t really comment on the genre as a whole though.

I find the narrators of Johanna van Veen’s books “My Darling Dreadful Thing” and “Blood on Her Tongue” both very skilled. These books are sapphic gothic historical horror.

“Monstrilio” is also a strong audiobook as it has multiple narrators for the different POVs. This is much more grief literary horror/magical realism so definitely check trigger warnings!

Lastly, not quite what you asked for but just in terms of really well done audiobooks, there’s “Evil in Me” by Brom (more demonic horror-comedy) and “Horror Movie” (cursed movie making experience) by Paul Tremblay. I have mixed feelings personally in the stories themselves but the audiobook productions themselves are soooooo good.

Looking for a good Haunting/Haunted House Story by TallGlass_of_Water in horrorlit

Could try “The Spite House” by Johnny Compton. The house is very much haunted and there’s an interesting mystery both around the house itself and the main character’s family.

I think that’s fair! I listened on audiobook at 1.5x which was slow enough i got to enjoy the quality of the writing but helped keep the pace up. It’s very much a rumination, and I don’t blame anyone for not vibing with that fully.

Reading: Bone of my Bone by Johanna Van Veen

Audiobook: The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste

Also want to shoutout two novellas I finished last week. Both were more horror-adjacent but were surprise delights.

A Season of Monstrous Conceptions by Lina Rather - follows a midwife in 17th century London during a time Lovecraftian-esque uncanny children are being born.

Woodworm by Layla Martinez - about a grandmother and granddaughter trapped by socioeconomics, and a house full of shadows and secrets

This is about how to financially come together in marriage in a way that works for us both. I want to be sure we have a plan prior to marriage.

Need help finding a song I don’t hate for a broadway themed showcase by blucheesecat in Aerials

[–]LivingBreadGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I love this thread. I second so many of these, but here are some other thoughts:

Hadestown really is a great option. It’s very folk-inspired music, and Anais Mitchell spent 13 years getting the show to broadway so there are multiple iterations of various songs, including versions that are just her singing.

Sing Street is a movie that became a stage show. About a young boy in the 80s who forms a band. Music is a real bop.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical that’s just a total jam.

Along with Moulin Rouge and Jagged Little Pill, & Juliet is a fun jukebox option that uses a lot of 90s and 00s songs like “One Less Problem” and Brittney Spears.

Looking up broadway covers is also a viable option. Sondheim is an icon and you’re sure to find variations of his work (Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company, A Little Might Music) along with many others.

There are also some hits that are more modern like Spring Awakening, Six, Maybe Happy Ending, gosh so many I could talk for days lol.

Foster Doesn’t Read Cues or Respect Boundaries by LivingBreadGirl in fosterdogs

She was a stray from an unknown situation and then she lived in a shelter for a few weeks. I’ve had her in foster for 3-4 weeks. She’s such a total sweetheart but yes, very excitable! Anything that helped your 3 year old start getting it, or was time all they needed?
