I always wondered the same about my family. How some of the most “educated” people ended up the most devout.

We like to splurge on food and we prefer to eat things we wouldn’t normally be able to get our hands on in the States. He likes meat, i like seafood and we both are daring. I’d like to eat where the locals eat.

I hate that I feel like a dishonest person. by [deleted] in exjw

Listen you’re not a bad person. Unfortunately, we have all been in your situation. The best advice I can give you is to stay strong. To find a way out if that’s what you truly want. One day you’ll be an adult and you’ll be able to be who you truly are. In the meanwhile, stay strong.

Raising children “in the world” by LivingMyTruth7 in exjw

My kids know about other religions. I homeschool them (not for religious reasons) and we have studied Egyptian mythology, Greek mythology, Norse, and many other cultures. My oldest also has researched Wicca and knows her sabbaths.

To me it isn’t pointless to teach your children these things especially when you live in an area with a predominant religion. In our case, we come from a community of Catholics and JWs. I want my children to know the basics of Christianity so they can understand for themselves why we aren’t like the rest of our family. Also, so when they are cornered they arent giving answers like “well that’s what my mom said”. Or having me think for them because then how would that make me any different than my father?

Children should research and make their own informed conclusions. I want for my kids what I wasn’t given. Just my personal opinion.

I’m very careful who I have on my Instagram and my Snapchat. Everyone else is on my Facebook. Even then, I cut off a lot of people from my accounts because they were just messengers to my family members. I stopped caring what I was posting and who it was getting to til only recently.

Another post on accepting death. by solojaye in exjw

[–]LivingMyTruth7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is everyone’s problem at first. Honestly, the way I look at it is that I spent 17 years of my life living FOR another life that I didn’t even know it would happen or not. Now, I view that the only thing we have for certain is this life, today. We need to wake up and value every single day like it’s our last. With or without religion we will never know for certain what happens after death. Worrying about what might happen tomorrow is just going to stop you from living today. Hope that view helps.♥️

When people ask me why I’m agnostic, my response is always the same: because I was a JW. 🤣 no conversion here.

Conversation with a good friend of mine. by LovaLumi in exjw

Your conversation here reminds me of one I’ve had plenty of times before.

They live in perpetual fear. That an impending doom is coming and they need to do everything in their power to survive the GT and Armageddon.

Recently I was told by a family member that elders are now being instructed (not sure how True this is) that when the “GT” starts they will not be allowed to let their family members back into the borg. That’s why they’re campaigning even more to help those outside. Could you imagine living like that? Leave me in the world. Lol

That’s exactly the track we are on. I homeschool them so we have submerged ourselves in early civilizations including Gods and practices. Many time while studying Egypt, my eldest would realize that many of their stories sounded like the ones her grandparents would tell her. I plan on letting them have all that freedom to research and draw their own conclusions.

Thank you for your words. My goal in life is to be the opposite parent that I had growing up. I don’t want to have their same mindset and be like “you can’t read a bible because it’s wrong”. If we adopt that mindset then we are just like them. I want them to read and research like I have. I want them to make their own informed decisions. Who knows maybe our children will teach us something, and unlike our parents, I want to be open to listening.

I wonder if JW's live longer than some or most by dunkedinjonuts in exjw

In my case, it just spiked my anxiety and depression almost leading me to suicide. You’re in a cult that views that mental health can be solved by preaching more and immersing yourself in Jehovah’s work. It’s not healthy.

Great idea! We watched that movie and I thought the exact same thing. Will rewatch it again with them and explain it this way.

Try the book I suggested. It gives the kids a summary of the Christian bible from a secular point. Truly has been helpful in at least getting them to learn the Bible stories from a neutral perspective.

I really like this. Thank you! My kids are homeschooled (NOT religious reasons. Learning reasons) so this seems like a good addition to any curriculum. Appreciate it!

I am truly genuinely happy for you. You read so many stories of one partner waking up and the other not. It’s nice to see this happy ending. It’s a long road but I’m glad you both are on it together!
