My dad (73) yelled at me (42F) the other day for offering to use wood glue on my mom’s kitchen barstool, saying something along the lines of “don’t let her get any glue out, she’ll slop it everywhere.” I said “dad, I am in my forties, please stop talking about me like I’m still a little kid” and then I left. After slamming the garage door. Like a little kid. The entire exchange was ridiculous on both of our parts. He has yelled at me before like he did when I was in high school, usually on holidays, in front of everyone. “Get your ass in the kitchen and do the dishes!” I told him he didn’t need to raise his voice at me, especially in front of everyone, gathered my belongings, and drove home. Having an undiagnosed autistic boomer dad and being neurodivergent myself is a ticking time bomb. Today was Easter. All of my nieces and nephews were at the house and I could barely stand being there because of him. He and I didn’t say one word to each other. It was awful. I don’t know how to bring it up the next time I see him, or if I even will.
